I don't know any major religions that believe we were created by aliens.

Scientology and Mormonism :contract:

Do you believe Prometheus tries to adhere to the theology of one of those?
No, they are Major Religions which believe we were created by aliens.
First Maxim - "There are only two amounts, too few and enough."
First Corollary - "You cannot have too many soldiers, only too few supplies."
Second Maxim - "Be willing to exchange a bad idea for a good one."
Second Corollary - "You can only be wrong or agree with me."

A terrorist which starts a slaughter quoting Locke, Burke and Mill has completely missed the point.
The fact remains that the only person or group to applaud the Norway massacre are random Islamists.

Mission to Mars is horrendously atrocious.

Against Van Halen, against life.

Well, I would dispute calling them Major Religions especially using Capital Letters, but even if we accept that they are, minor superficial resemblances to their theology doesn't make the movie a religious work.

It's a creation story, that is just as religious as virtually any other creation story.

Not when the "gods" are mortal beings themselves.

Why does the god have to be immortal?

Put it this way- aliens creating humans isn't any less compatible with a rational atheistic worldview than humans creating artificial intelligence.

And if you look at such stories as literalist speculation, sure, that works, but I think we all know they're not.

Anyway, Guardians of the Galaxy was really good.  Full review whenever.

'Oblivion' - who knew a passable recent Tom Cruise film existed.
Edge of Tomorrow was great
It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

The correct response is "Fucking everybody but Mongers."  Very few Cruise films have been bad.

Knight and Day was pretty bad, and Jack Reacher was thoroughly meh. I haven't seen Rock of Ages, but it got a 5.9 on IMDB. That's 3 of the 4 prior to Oblivion, probably enough to call it a bad patch. (MI4 was ok).

Let me see...

Edge of Tomorrow
Oblivion
Jack Reacher
MI Ghost Protocol
Rock of Ages
Knight and Day
Valkyrie
Tropic Thunder
MI 3
Lions for Lambs
War of the Worlds
Collateral

That's for the past 10 years, when his career started to decline, and that's a comfortable over .500 batting average to me.

They're mostly singles though. He used to be able to hit for more power.

Heck, I'm bored so let's belabor this analogy.

Collateral- RBI single
War of the Worlds- sac bunt
Lions for Lambs- hit into double play
MI3- bases empty single
Tropic Thunder- pinch hit RBI double
Valkyrie- sac fly
Knight and Day- strike out
Ghost Protocol- walk
Jack Reacher- hit into fielder's choice
Oblivion- single, thrown out trying to take 2d

Haven't seen Edge of Tomorrow yet

Edge of Tomorrow is a Hail Mary go-ahead goal in the bottom of the ninth inning at Churchill Downs.

Ideologue

Collateral's great, Ghost Protocol's great, Oblivion was almost great... Tropic Thunder he was the best part of.

Also I want to go all the way back and put Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Rain Man, etc., into contention.

***

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014).  Great space opera, by the skin of its stupid, laughing, grinning teeth.

Chris Pratt and the Infinity Watch

A

Also Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014).  An eminently worthy sequel, but if that sounds less than entirely enthusiastic, it's because unlike its so-close-to-perfect predecessor, Dawn does have its problems--from its recombined DNA up.

A planet where hype evolved from men?
