It does read like the nominations to the Spirit Awards  :D

I mean, never in my life I'd have imagined to see Thomas Vinterberg scoring an Oscan nod.  :)

Well, it will be a fun ceremony. Mank has racked a lot of nominations and has the advantage of featuring Hollywood's favorite topic: itself. That said, I've read wonderful things about Nomadland and it looks like the frontrunner at the moment. It's supposedly getting a theatrical release in Spain in a couple weeks, but right now most cinemas are still closed  <_<

I am surprised the Razzie Awards still exist, to be honest.

If you're curious, these are the films nominated for Worst Film in the Razzies this year.  :P

- 365 days (Polish 30 shades of Grey knockoff).
- Absolute Proof (OANN's conspiracy documentary about the 2020 US presidential election).
- Dolittle (failed Robert Downey Jr.-led remake).
- Fantasy Island (Horror prequel of the 70s TV show).
- Music (Sia's vanity project)

Nomadland seems interesting and weird. Apparently most of the cast (almost everyone except for Frances McDormand) are real nomads playing basically fictional versions of themselves.

Best actor

- Riz Ahmed, Sound of Metal
- Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
- Anthony Hopkins, The Father
- Gary Oldman, Mank
- Steven Yeun, Minari

[...]

Best supporting actor

- Sacha Baron Cohen, The Trial of the Chicago 7
- Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah
- Leslie Odom, Jr, One Night in Miami
- Paul Raci, Sound of Metal
- Lakeith Stanfield, Judas and the Black Messiah
:hmm: So Judas and the Black Messiah has no leading role.

I always thought the studios worked really really hard to avoid the risk of this happening.

Not really, a lot will try to exploit the rules and run someone who should be a lead as supporting if they believe the field there will be weaker, or to avoid competing with a co-lead. Think of Mahershala Ali or Brad Pitt winning for supporting actor in recent years.

Hadn't realized that, in any case it's the studios the ones that propose the Academy if a role should go to the leading or supporting category, I guess they thought that putting both in the same category increased their chances of at least one of them getting the award, and assumed that supporting actor had better chances.

Yeah - it's the competing with the co-lead that I find weird. Neither is in Best Actor, both are in Best Supporting Actor. I think Daniel Kaluuya will win - but it feels a bit weird to risk diluting their vote in one category and have nothing in the other

They actually nominated one of the songs from the Eurovision Song Contest film?  :lmfao:

Why not Jaja Ding Dong instead?  :P

Razzie Awards made more sense in the '80s when they actually honoured some real so-bad-it's good-movies.  :P

It was a great song! (As were the rest of the songs in that modern classic :P)

I would have gone for Volcano Man or the *amazing* Lion of Love, as done by Dan Stevens as the Russian singer.

I suspect they didn't see much chance for Kaluuya as lead and went for him as supporting, while at the same time they couldn't just not run Stanfield.

In all seriousness I'd be really interested to read how studios decide which song to submit from an original soundtrack. Like are there rules for what wins with the Academy. For example the rules of winning Eurovision - a key change is fatal and almost never wins (but we always think it should/feels Eurovisiony), minor keys do better than major keys etc.

Edit: Also agreed on Lion of Love - though I'd personally nominate the Eurovision past winners/contestants sing-along which was basically like the gay version of the MCU.

They must have thought that Gary Oldman was a shoo-in for Mank?

Yeah - I'm just more surprised they didn't put Stanfield forward for best actor.
