They're really just an evolution along the lines of the rest of the Trek world they portrayed, and with modern skill/technology.

Lots of bling, overly garish outfits, overall darker tones/ambiance and super-saturated colors (this goes for everything in the show, not just the Klingons).

Like with most modern films, it's more about visuals, wowing-jaded-millennials-with-super-luxurious-CGI, low-quality dialogue and 2-dimensional characters.

Or maybe I am just getting old and curmudgeonly.  :P

The Brain

As long as the characters are in actual 2D and not fucking annoying 3D crap.

I think you are wearing rose tinted glasses about trek in the past.

In Canada it is being shown on CTV, but man - I can't remember the last time I sat down to watch a non-sports show on broadcast tv.  Only showed the first episode though.
it airs on Space, or Space.ca if you want it streaming.  there's a surplus charge if you want it streaming without ads.

It was...okay.   Definitely some serialized television, which is a good thing.  Not sure why they needed to re-imagine the Klingons yet again, but I'll give them some rope.  Some very nice production values, which is also nice.

All I can say is I am eager to see what happens next, which is about all you can say for a TV show.

Given what happened in the first two episodes, it is unclear to me what will happen in the 3rd. I am curious though and eager to see it...so yeah, I think so far it is working as a TV show.

I wonder what kind of viewers its going to get in the US, since only the first episode is being shown on CBS.  You have to sign up for CBS's streaming service to watch the rest.

Not sure CTV is showing the rest of it.  I could be wrong. I think it's on Space TV.

Huh.  You might be right.

We cut back the cable bill awhile ago (beyond the basics we only get sports and kids channels) so I'm pretty sure we don't get Space.  So do I sign up for Space, or sign up for Crave TV? :hmm:
CraveTV might be available at a reduced price as part of your cable package, so check the price for that first.

Another point on the new Star Trek.
The main character is clearly a woman. There's no gender bending involved.
And her name is Michael. Not Michelle. Michael.

Here, buddy.

QuoteHow 'Star Trek: Discovery' Lead Character Michael Burnham Was Named

Sonequa Martin-Green will become a part of Star Trek history as the franchise's first woman of color lead on Star Trek: Discovery, but some fans are hung up on her character's name.

Martin-Green will play Commander Michael Burnham, and the traditionally male name for the female character has become a point of discussion for fans of Star Trek.

However, fans of Discovery's co-creator Bryan Fuller should recognize it as the creator's signature.

"We've worked on many shows with Bryan and it's a motif," executive producer Aaron Harberts tells TV Guide. "It's his signature move to name his lead women with names that would typically be associated as male."

Looking back on Fuller's work, the pattern holds. Ellen Muth played George on Dead Like Me, Anna Friel played Chuck in Pushing Daisies, and Caroline Dhavernas played Jaye on Wonderfalls.

The producers of Star Trek: Discovery considered a handful of names for Martin-Green's character before eventually landing on Michael.

"I have known of, I think, two [female] Michaels: Michael Sneed, [who] was a gossip columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times and Michael Steele who played the bass for The Bangles," Harberts says. "That's a deep dive on female Michaels. And we talked about it in the entire room. It was just like, 'This is a really, really interesting name.' And, of course, an archangel is named Michael as well, and it just had a lot of potency for us."

Martin-Green seems fond of the name herself and notes that there's an in-universe reason for the name as well.

"I appreciated the statement it makes all on its own to have this woman with this male name, just speaking of the amelioration of how we see men and women in the future," Martin-Green said. "But I also just decided for my creation and for my background and whatnot that I was named after my father. And so, we get a little bit of exploration of the father-daughter dynamic."
"I've never been quite sure what the point of a eunuch is, if truth be told. It seems to me they're only men with the useful bits cut off."

I'm surprised the haters are so much more vocal than the devotees. Anyway, I vote good but not great.

Yeah, I also thought it was good but not great.

It's not a thrill-a-minute action movie;  it's more thoughtful and slower paced than that.  Frankly, it's probably a bit too slowly paces at times.

I'm not sure about the data cap - we stream like fiends in our house, and never been over.

But this reminded me to check.  After two years of Telus digging up our neighborhood, the fiber connection to my house is up and running.  I'm going to switch over next week... let's see... 150MB up and down, no data cap, sounds good to me.

Watching The Deuce.  HBO miniseries about 42nd street hoes and porn pre-Disney.  Man the 70s sucked. Eye candy not so glorious so far, but I'm holding out hopes for the college drop out.
