Seriously - if you're in a reasonably mobile ship I don't see a whole lot of use to rear-firing weapon slots.  Sure they're 'canon', just not very useful.

Seriously.  The escorts do skimp on rear-fire slots, and it's still a pain in the backside when you have to go up against an enemy that's going to take multiple salvoes (frex, a squad of 1x Negh'Var, 2x K'Tinga, and 2x Raptor)

You missed the "if you're in a reasonably mobile ship".  Cruisers clearly don't qualify.

I can't figure out the Doomsday Device quest.

I can "equip" the damn torpedos, but can't seem to put them on my action bar, not manage to fire them at all.

They go on the device slots and should be able to fire from there (in default UI the area right above the BO's skills)

Figured it out - you equip the launcher, then the torps automatically show up in your abilities.  But since I was only showing one level of abilities, it took awhile to figure that out.

The silly thing is that when you get a new ship the first impulse is going to the exchange and decking it out in the high end stuff for this tier with all the money you make on the side collecting crap.

The level cap will be increased to Rear Admiral Grade 10 in a larger update later this year. Additionally, a new Respec system will be added. At that point you can earn more Skill Points and purchase and rearrange your skills.

Liquidisim: The starship skills such as Heavy Escort, do those carry thru to higher level ships such as fleet escort. If they apply only to t3 ships, then there is no point in having those skills come endgame.

There is hardly no point, though these skills currently become less useful in the endgame. However, we are in the process of changing this. All ship skills will grant some bonus to the ship above it. So an Assault Cruiser will benefit from Starship Captain, Cruiser Captain, Heavy Cruiser Captain, Exploration Cruiser Captain and Assault Cruiser Captain, but it will get the most benefit from Assault Cruiser Captain Skill. So if you want to maximize your Assault Cruiser, you will need all those skills. Note, the Assault Cruiser will not gain any benefit from the Star Cruiser Captain skill and vice-versa. The bonuses only affect ships upwards along the tree, not laterally.
