Walnuts are popular. There are different kinds that we see out here, though. Black walnut trees are much more hardy and survive a lot better. But White(English) walnut trees produce better tasting nuts. So, they grow one of each, then cut the black walnut tree off at the stump and graft the white walnut tree on. So they get the strength and rootstock of the black one with the nuts from the white. All through northern CA you see big orchards of trees with white tops and black bottoms.

That's a good idea.

I love walnuts but if we do nut trees it's more likely to be a pecan, I think.

This could be fun for you Caliga. Hopefully it doesn't take too many years for a tree to give produce. I picked cherry, walnut and peach. How many trees are you thinking of planting?

May I make an alternate suggestion?

Try and grow some grrapes and make wine.

@KRonn, dunno... probably a dozen or so.  But I doubt we would plant a dozen peach trees, or a dozen pecan trees... most likely 3-4 varieties of trees.

@Beeb, I did a bit of research on that and, while I can obviously grow Concord grapes (and therefore make Manischewitz :x ), apparently I may be able to grow Riesling grapes in this climate. :mmm:  I think a vineyard is a hell of alot more work tho, and turning grapes into must is no walk in the park either, though I guess it's a stomp in a barrel among other things. ^_^

A lovely year-round Jaronifer tree.

This is the correct answer, I see no need to read any further.

This will create some work for you keeping the fruit off the ground, trimming them, etc. You're going to be looking at some labor anyway.

Of those I'd go with peach, pear, and apricot.  And some blackberry bushes.  Getting nuts out of the shell is too much work.

Too bad you can't grow avocado there, avocado trees are awesome.

I voted for Quince and Pecan (because they taste good).

I have a Quince tree in my backyard, they aren't very big, so it doesn't become a nuisance.

I will warn you on fruit trees. Unless you REALLY like the fruit than I would advise against it because you'll spend a lot of time picking them up to throw out. Nuts can be as bad but squirrels and other critters will gather those for food, so it isn't as much a problem.
