The Miami Valley's struggling economy is looking for a new source of job growth and with the loss of General Motors, some suppliers are looking to switch from automotive production to aerospace.
Dozens of people from supply companies gathered at the National Composite Center in Kettering Tuesday to learn how they might become a supplier for a company called Airbus.
Airbus is one of the world's biggest manufacturers in aviation and the company is looking to increase its use of Ohio companies in their supply chain.
Sen. Sherrod Brown attended the event and said, "We are Airbus' No. 1 state."
Business people are hoping to tap into the aerospace market, too. In the crowd was Jeff Johnson, who works for F and G Tool and Die in Dayton. The company makes all kinds of items for manufacturing.
Johnson said, "The market is competitive. Overseas is very competitive. Hopefully, with Airbus being here, they are looking to localize some of the work in the Ohio Valleys, maybe we can generate some business out of this."
The effort has the support of Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, who said companies in the Miami Valley should fit the needs at Airbus very well.
Strickland said, "We have wonderful array of companies that provide expertise, research and will enable this region of Ohio to excel."
Could the state rebound with more business with Airbus? Both the company and organizers of the summit are optimistic.
Alan McArtor with Airbus said, "We've already invested $4.3 billion a year, so let's go make that better."
Brown said, "To make a car, to make an airplane, you build it with components from mostly companies that you've never heard of sprinkled around the Miami Valley and sprinkled around the Midwest."
As the economy improves, the hope in the Miami Valley is that companies will be able to expand and eventually add new jobs.

I was there, and Senator Sherrod Brown is as a big dork in person as he is on TV.

Walmart has its own airport, as does FedEx;  why wouldn't one of the largest schools in the country?
And besides, how the hell else do you get to Columbus?

QuoteAshtabula County: Judge tells residents to "Arm themselves"
Jeff Maynor

JEFFERSON -- In the ongoing financial crisis in Ashtabula County, the Sheriff's Department has been cut from 112 to 49 deputies.  With deputies assigned to transport prisoners, serve warrants and other duties, only one patrol car is assigned to patrol the entire county of 720 square miles.

"I did the best with what they (the county commissioners) gave me. If it wasn't enough, don't blame me, don't blame this department," said Sheriff Billy Johnson.

Johnson said he is suing the commissioners to get a determination of whether he should use his limited budget to carry out obligations defined by law or put more patrol cars on the streets.

"I just can't do it anymore," he said. "I have to have the court explain to the commissioners and to me what my statutory duties are."

The Ashtabula County Jail has confined as many as 140 prisoners. It now houses only 30 because of reductions in the staff of corrections officers.

All told, 700 accused criminals are on a waiting list to serve time in the jail.

Are there dangerous people free among the 700 who cannot be locked up?

"There probably are," Sheriff Johnson said, "but I'm telling you, any known violent criminal, we're housing them. We've got murderers in there."

Ashtabula County is the largest county in Ohio by land area.

Ashtabula County Common Pleas Judge Alfred Mackey was asked what residents should do to protect themselves and their families with the severe cutback in law enforcement.

"Arm themselves," the judge said. "Be very careful, be vigilant, get in touch with your neighbors, because we're going to have to look after each other."

Ashtabula County gun dealers and firearms instructors tell WKYC their business has really picked up since the Sheriff's Department cutbacks began some months ago.

"That's exactly why they are coming, so that they can protect themselves," says Tracy Williams, a certified firearms instructor in Jefferson. "They don't feel that they are protected. They want to be able to protect themselves."

Williams says interest in his classes has doubled recently, and many of those coming are people who he would not normally expect to have interest in obtaining a concealed carry permit.

"And as far as him (Judge Mackey) telling you to arm yourselves and protect yourselves, you don't have any other option," Williams told WKYC. "We don't have the law enforcement out here to handle it right now."

Ashtabula County, where unemployment is higher than the state average, is asking voters to approve a one half per cent sales tax increase in May.

The tax hike would raise the tax in the county to seven percent.

Obese man dies after found fused to chair

By QMI Agency

A morbidly obese man is dead after he was found fused to a chair that he had been stuck on for two years.

The 43-year-old man from Bellaire, Ohio, was discovered unconscious on Sunday by his girlfriend.

Emergency crews had to pry him free, as his skin was stuck to the recliner with urine, feces and maggots.

Local reports say one officer threw away his uniform because the conditions were so putrid.

"The living room where the man lived in his chair was very filthy, very deplorable. It's unbelievable that somebody lives in conditions like that," Jim Chase, a code enforcer, told local news station WTRF.

A hole was cut in the wall of the home to remove the heavy man.

Officials said his girlfriend, who lived with him along with another roommate, told investigators she fed the man in his chair, as he complained of leg pain.

The unidentified man was transported to hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

Also, wtf anybody can get laid these days.

Ever been to Bellaire?  This dude was probably one of the better looking people in that town.

This same thing happened before. A guy was fused to his toilet seat, I think it was. If this story is even true; but I think the first one is true. Then how can someone living with the guy, in such horrid conditions, not call an ambulance or medical authorities about it? Sheesh... Yeah, the guy probably doesn't want anyone to be called but I'd be damned if I'd live in putrid conditions with someone like that!! Plus the deteriorating condition of the poor guy; not doing him any favors by not calling someone to help.

Yeah that makes no sense.  There must be more to this story.
