I keep thinking Russia should be good. They usually are good at sports. Just not this one I guess because they always seem to underachieve.

Russia/SU used to, at least in the '60s (Yashin invented modern goalkeeping) and had a decent level till the '80s with only some flashes afterwards.

Just like Turkey, the sheer number of Russians should help them find 11 world class players. Maybe Putin and Erdogan find soccer stars too threatening to their regime and keeps having them assassinated if they get too good.

Sheer demographics are not a good tool to gauge a country's footie potential. You have, on one hand, tiny countries like Uruguay and Portugal, punching way above their weight, and on the other behemoths like Russia and Turkey that most of the time suck donkey balls. Not to speak of China or India, of course.
