Here's some happy news: WHO is now saying that although asymptomatic transmission can happen, it is "very rare".

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/08/asymptomatic-coronavirus-patients-arent-spreading-new-infections-who-says.html

Their results no longer apply to the US though?

I think she means Victoria Island. Cambridge Bay is pretty nice, I hear.

Now I want to go here, too.

Same

Google Street View has all of it, even the interior of the public buildings. It's fascinating.

*spends the next half an hour exploring Victoria Island*

Sure, boss. I've got stuff to do.
Yesterday, upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I wish, I wish he'd go away...

My kid is now signed up for a once a week hockey camp over the summer.

The rink is on a First Nation reserve, so it's not subject to the same provincial regulations.  But even then it's limited to 10 kids on the ice, and you have to show up fully dressed except for your skates.

Please tell me the kid team size on the ice is 5 even in normal times.

Admiral Yi

Can't forget the goalie.  He's half the team by volume.

So is it or isn't it? Reason I ask it that it would seem a bit grumpy not to let the kids play with full teams on the ice, which would mean 12 kids instead of 10 if the kids have real team sizes. The extra risk seems tiny.

It's a practice session, not a game.

Good. :)

NB I've never done hockey, I don't know if you ever play a bit of a practice game during practice sessions.

I'd have given you mad props if you were visiting Cambridge Bay, Nunavut (locatd on Victoria Island) though.  It only costs... $1400 return from Edmonton.

You may want to look again. I'm looking at flights from Vancouver that are only $900 r/t at the end of August.

Nah, fights in and out of the north are always really expensive.  Remember these are very small fly-in communities.  They have to have the flights, but they don't really get economies of scale.  You fly in on a 737, but the whole back half of the plane is blocked off for cargo.  And Edmonton actually tends to be the hub for these flights, as it the most northerly large city in Canada.

So you're saying that the cost of the flights that I'm looking at right now online to Cambridge Bay are a lie? That they're a lot more than the $900 that is quoted at this second that I can pull out a credit card and buy? From Vancouver BC to Cambridge Bay with a stopover in Edmonton. It's not true?

EDIT: So, you are 100% correct. The amount quoted above was NOT the round trip price. I'm not sure why it SAID it was the round trip price when in fact it was the one-way price.

Regardless, you are correct, and here is my mea culpa.

Washington state continues to have over two hundred daily infections.  Not sure about other border states, but that number is going to have to drop before the border reopens.  The Liberals would face a lot of criticism if they lifted the border restrictions too early.
There are a few early signs of second waves in some American states - particularly California, Texas and Florida.

Also second waves in Iran and Israel (though this is from a very low base). Still no sign of any in Europe.

They will happen as they did in Singapore and South Korea, the key will be whether the public health system is able to identify and contain them.

In London there have now been a few 24 periods with no new cases reported and for the last week or so the daily deaths (in hospitals) have been under 10. It seems like most of the infections and fatalities are now in other areas especially the Midlands and North-East and Yorkshire. Again I think it's probably relevant that London, I think, has fewer care homes per capita than other bits of the country but more inter-generational households.

A troubling stat is that the percentage of positive test results in Washington State is much higher than here.  There testing regime is broader than ours so one expect their number to be lower - we only test symptomatic people.  That probably explains why their infection numbers remain stubbornly stable.   But why? Early on they adopted about the same lockdown protocols as us. Perhaps we polite Canadian just followed the rules better?  It will be interesting to see what researchers make of this in time.

edit: Meri, you would love Victoria!
