Quote from: crazy canuck on Today at 10:18:14 AMAll funding for biomedical research has been frozen.  This one doesn't make sense at all.  Why would the United States want to give up on one of its best industries at a time that the Trump administration wants to bring jobs back to the United States?

Just watch a video clip of him signing any one of his executive orders. It is clear sense does not dwell there... despite BB's valiant efforts to suggest otherwise.

My point has long been that as much as I don't like him Trump (and others around him) are not gibbering idiots unable to feed themselves.  Trying to understand what they are doing doesn't imply support, or that I think they're good ideas.

Musk is trying to find trillions in savings so Trump can make his tax cuts permanent, or even cut even more.  That's why they're doing it.  What the long-term implications of such cuts aren't a big concern for him.

He's said that you have to be willing to cut so deep you might have to put some things back - that if you don't that means you're not cutting deep enough.  That's why he's doing it.

The fact that government medical research funding isn't like a feature on an EV, or a department as Twitter, and can not be put back so easily, apparently hasn't occurred to him.

Right they are carrying out a well thought out programme of action aside from the parts that they haven't thought out.

I'll agree with you they might not be gibbering idiots. But you keep trying to see the kernel of a rational plan where I don't think there is any. They care only about getting more power and more money for themselves.

I think my entire point is that it is thought out - but not well thought out.

It's a plan scribbled on the back of a cocktail napkin - but it is a plan of sorts.

Trump announces he's getting rid of paper straws.

Of course - he's doing no such thing.  He's ordering the federal government to stop buying paper straws - but he can't order the entire country to do so.

And of course - it's "flooding the zone with shit" so we'll talk about this for a day, and not the takeover/dismantling of the federal government.

Paper straws were a thing for like 10 minutes in 2021 right? I don't know maybe they are still out there. I haven't seen one in years.

I thought it was a really obnoxious troll job by American corporations. People were like "plastic straws and very wasteful and gross. You can only use them once and they just go in the landfill. Can't you come up with something better? Maybe biodegradable?" and business was like "how about something much shittier? Something so bad, you cannot even use it once? It just falls apart immediately? You like that, you fucking idiots?" I guess they showed us to dare not like their terrible plastic straws.

But this is like some weird Boomer theatre Trump does. He did it all the time during his first term. He came out against shower heads that were low pressure and in favor of incandescent light bulbs. The most random and bizarre shit.

So this is Canada, but I haven't seen a plastic straw in a few years now.  Only paper.  And they are shittier, although they've gotten a little bit better.

Incandescent light bulbs is the strangest though.  While those CFL bulbs were a mixed bag, modern LED bulbs are so much better than an incandescent in every way (unless if you deliberately need a heat lamp).

Ok in Texas we had paper straws for about a month and then they vanished forever. I was not aware they were still being used someplace. So maybe some Boomers out there still have this grievance.

And it isn't strange if you live in the United States. Old people have regarded non-incandescent light bulbs with the horror RFK Jr uses for vaccines. There is some kind of evil woke agenda behind every LED or CFL.

Paper straws still a thing here.  It was the blip of dumb moves in the guise of environmentalism like getting rid of plastic grocery bags.

If God had wanted you to have a vaccine or a pill, it would have been written in the Bible, no? :hmm:

I never had a problem with paper grocery bags and you could do so many weird arts and crafts with them. But they just kind of vanished years ago. I miss being asked "paper or plastic?" Now if you don't bring your own shopping bags you just have plastic foisted upon you. But will Trump address my grumpy boomer grievance? No.

The sad part is, it isn't even the fundy religious nuts who are driving this stuff. They are weirdly sidelined in the Trump era.

The city banned single use plastic grocery bags a few years ago.  It's still weird to go out into the country and get one.

At the grocery store you can now get a paper bag for $0.25, or a reusable one for $2.  I think nostalgia is affecting your memory of paper bags - they rip super easily and you  have to be careful to hold them from the bottom.

Oh they did and would instantly disintegrate when wet. I worked in a grocery store, I remember how terrible they were. I usually double bagged everything, But I still liked them better than plastic.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. You'll miss the joys of those plastic bags if they're ever taken away. You need more immigrant friends. We'll teach you the ways of reusing those bags you detest. Also, that dishwashers make great storage spaces.... Mainly for all those grocery bags
