Time for Yale Law to go back and change his Con Law grade to an F.

Sheilbh should be thrilled - JDV is channeling Vermeule's bullshit.  An alliance between MAGA redneckism and neo-Jesuits to restore the constitution of Louis XIV.

I'm certainly getting 'I am the state' vibes from Elon Musk...

Um...who determines what is or is not legitimate executive power if not judges? The executive?

Quote from: garbon on February 09, 2025, 06:43:15 AMI think it is important to remember that the majority of Americans do not back Trump.

Right. They majority either back him or do not oppose him to any significant degree.

The majority of voters back him. The only thing we know about the others (adults) is that they are not willing to do the bare minimum for their democracy.

Well he got 49.8% of the voters.

But the non-voters did not oppose him enough to vote against him and that's all I need to know.

Huh, I thought he went over 50. I guess everything will be fine then.

That 0.02% will make all the difference!

Given the explicit White House position that the only person who can declare a conflict of interest between Elon Musk's government role and business/private role is Elon Musk, it follows that they believe that only the executive has the power to determine the power of the executive.
The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.   -G'Kar

It's a democratic vote of the people.  You get one vote for every dollar of net worth over $300 billion.

Unsurprisingly, Trump has judged Canada and Mexico's efforts to be lacking and talks of imposing tariffs of 25% on steel and aluminum tomorrow.

Always on Sunday.  As if he wanted to manipulate markets.

What? I thought he was giving them a month?

Oh well. This is a Calvinball Presidency.

I think Whatshisname on the Rest is Politics US podcast is right: Trump is addicted to attention especially now at his advanced age and that's why he is constantly announcing outrageous stuff.

The real danger of course is that Musk and the Project 2025 people are using the distraction to enact their own agendas.

QuoteUnited States President Donald Trump has reiterated his controversial proposal to take control of Gaza, saying he is committed to "buying and owning" the war-ravaged enclave.

Speaking to reporters on board Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said Gaza should be thought of as a "big real estate site" and other countries in the Middle East could be tasked with handling its redevelopment.

"As far as us rebuilding it, we may give it to other states in the Middle East to build sections of it; other people may do it, through our auspices," Trump said while en route to New Orleans to attend the Super Bowl.

"But we're committed to owning it, taking it, and making sure that Hamas doesn't move back. There's nothing to move back into. The place is a demolition site."

Trump also claimed that displaced Palestinians would prefer not to return to Gaza despite his proposal prompting backlash from Palestinian representatives and much of the international community.

"If we could give them a home in a safer area – the only reason they're talking about returning to Gaza is they don't have an alternative. When they have an alternative, they don't want to return to Gaza," the US president said.

It's hard to imagine he would want boots on the ground.
"I've never been quite sure what the point of a eunuch is, if truth be told. It seems to me they're only men with the useful bits cut off."
I drank because I wanted to drown my sorrows, but now the damned things have learned to swim.

I don't know what's more insane, the fact that he keeps doubling down on this bizarre proposal, or that all his coterie will keep tying themselves into knots trying to make it look like 5D chess.

How to lose allies in the Middle East

QuoteEgypt announced Sunday that it will host an emergency Arab summit on Feb. 27 to discuss "new and dangerous developments" after U.S. President Donald Trump proposed to resettle Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.

Trump's suggestion, made at a White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week, infuriated the Arab world, including Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia — key allies of Washington.

Both Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and Jordanian King Abdullah II dismissed Trump's call to resettle 1.8 million Palestinians in Gaza and for the U.S. to take ownership of the enclave, but Trump claims that they would eventually accept it.

A statement from Egypt's Foreign Ministry said it would host the Arab League summit in Cairo following talks at the highest level in Arab countries in recent days, "including the state of Palestine that asked to hold the summit in order to discuss new and dangerous developments for the Palestinian cause."
