That doesn't mean anything. I use lodestar all the time.

Really? How often does it come up in conversation?
It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

If I were writing that op-ed and truly intended to stay anonymous (which we can't be sure is the case here), I'd certainly try to adopt someone else's writing idiosyncrasies, probably from half a dozen different people, just to throw off the trail.  If I were more cynical, I'd try to adopt just one other person's style, and Pence would be an ideal target due to not being fireable.

Of course, reality is rarely as Byzantine as is possible.  The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.

How many people in the administration could possibly have disdain for Trump?

Man, working in the White House sounds like a hoot right now.

If Pence is actively couping the presidency I'd be impressed. Wouldn't have expected that from him.

Apparently the statement from Kelly is the same he made in May. :D

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/01/white-house-chief-of-staff-kelly-says-its-total-bs-that-he-called-trump-an-idiot.html

[...]Kelly's disparaging remark was first reported Monday by NBC News. In a statement Monday, Kelly called the report "total BS," and characterized his relationship with Trump as "incredibly candid and strong." He added of the president, "He always knows where I stand and he and I both know this story is total BS."[...]

Re: the "lodestar" - I think it's a pretty rarely used word that the VP seems to have a fondness for, and there's 3 possible reasons why it snuck in there:
- the editorial was written by Mike Pence
- the editorial was written by someone who knew this word would catch attention and be associated with Mike Pence (maybe his use of the word is an in joke among staff)
- the writer (not Pence) just thought that it was a good word to use and may have known it before or picked it up from VP or elsewhere

Also, if this editorial was traced to Pence, I think his chances of becoming (or remaining) president will be small. And I doubt he'd be willing to hand the NYT the means to dethrone him if he becomes president.

Trump sounds like he needs to be put into a retirement home

Watch the movie "The Thing" for a good look into what is happening there right now
