A 26% tory lead gone in 6 months, simply from Starmer appearing sensible and not a cranky old fool  :D

He will need to do a lot more of course; but we still have the end of the transition arrangements and a big increase in unemployment to come. At some point though we need to find out more about Starmer's team and potential policies.

Richard Hakluyt

17% of the population have yet to know who Starmer is of course https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/explore/public_figure/Keir_Starmer

It is hard to comprehend how little the average voter knows about politics.

 It was so frustratingly simple the change Labour needed to make.

But the big issue is that there's not much evidence of 2015 Labour - 2019 Tory swtichers changing their mind yet. And the big issue is England - Scotland's lost to Labour (the Scottish Labour leader is less popular than Boris Johnson which would cause me to resign in shame ) - but in England the Tories have about 350 seats to Labour's 180. Even assuming they wanted to do a rainbow coalition they still need to win about 100 seats in England alone to have a chance.

Yeah. And that's the most important fact in politics

Please can we stop forgetting about Cumbria. I know we are awkwardly northern and Scottish, but still, somebody has to include us

Cumbria is well within what was once The Kingdom of Northumbria so you're more than welcome. We wil work to remind people of that fact!

100% behind this. Especially as they've clearly avoided the Yorkshire issues (and they've got the Yorkshire Party).

But also because, based on this post, we can finally hive off the Wirral and Cheshire to Wales :w00t:

We're not English, We are Northumbrian.

#NorthernRepublicNow

Though I feel they're a bit North-East centric - all about Northumbria and the Angel of the North :hmm: <_<

Edit: Also this is very true - I think it's our version of the soda/pop/etc thing in the US

Weird a weird division.

And technically the left behind southern bit is Sexeland. The north is paradoxically the true England :contract:

And don't think I didn't notice their sneakily forcing Berwick into Scotland.

If it were me the north would be split in twain, with the separate crowns of Lancaster, Yorkshire, and Bernicia (inc. Cumbria).

Of course you are. You find these things funny or charming for some reason. I don't.

Anything to divide people and stir up hate. God forbid anybody ever act like an adult and find ways to live with different kinds of people. These kinds of things are not particularly funny at all. Trying to create divisions and tribal hatred wherever it can be found. Got to love Nationalists.

:o I'm not a hate-monger!

Obviously he shouldn't have to do this - but Marcus Rashford is an absolute star. Watching him organise and shout out businesses and councils across the country offering holiday free school lunches for kids on his social media today has been incredible.

I know YOU'RE not

You just find this stuff cute and charming I think rather naively. These are not good people.

I'm getting much better at remembering to say Westminster rather than London when I'm raging against the machine. It is a very important distinction; the largest proportion of people living in poverty is in London, the interests of those people are broadly the same as those of the folk on Tyneside or Merseyside.

I still liked the map though, please forgive me Valmy   :P

Despite personal experience I can still find separatist movements amusing if they provide silly enough maps.  :P

That map is from an actual 1405 plan to partition the country :

Henry IV defeated them, though I can't remember the details; in fact I only know about these events via the Shakespeare plays.

The Brain

I don't think a return to a 15th century style of English government would necessarily be a bad thing.

. Fascinating. I didn't know of this before. For me it's an even blacker patch of history than the dark ages.

I am with Valmy, the way forward is finding ways to live together in (preferably decentralised but) large communities following the same rules and laws and not dividing stuff up, letting powerhungry sociopaths get their way by applying to the instinctive petty tribalism that lives in all of us.

Sowing division and seeking to cut off and separate instead of working on (heck, even demanding) cooperation and compromise is sinister and dangerous, not romantic.
