The Rhodes Scholarship is going to more problematic than taking down a statue.

I don't know if that's much difference between that and the 90% of Oriel College alumni (and donors) who voted to keep the statue last year.

That statue's going nowhere as long as it's within Oriel's power.

The difference is I would imagine if you take the name off the scholarship you lose the money that funds it.

Looking briefly into it it's a creation of statute.  So the name could be changed by Act of Parliament I assume.

And a trust which I think would be able to change the name if they wanted.

Edit: Having a quick look into it his will said they were to be Colonial Scholarships and American Scholarships. From what I can see the Acts of Parliament were to abolish the German Scholarships (twice) and to include women. Given that, I assume, it was the trustees who have already changed the name to "Rhodes Scholarships" and indeed opened up the new "Rhodes Mandela Scholarships" I don't see why they couldn't change the name.

So it is his lucre.

Still, if you change the name and it's still his loot, doesn't the taint remain?

Yeah - but what you going to do. Only alternative is expropriation which would require Parliament.

Maybe - as the Rhodes Mandela Scholarship was a start at doing, aim to help the countries he didn't (especially given that I think the terms of his will explicitly excluded "black Africans" from the scholarship).

I seem to recall that one of the objects of the trust includes the name though.

Stolen from recent thoughts by Ben Judah. As well as opinion changing on immigration and the moves on Hong Kong, I think I was also wrong about CANZUK.

I thought it was a slightly crankish obsession on the sort of imperial-nostalgia right. But I now think actually foreign policy coordination with especially Canada and Australia makes a lot of sense. Given joint statements on Hong Kong and the G7 it's clear that actually the UK, Canada and Australia are all in basically the place on China and Russia - and similarly medium sized countries. It's clearly relevant if Trump wins again, but the EU is also in a different (and slightly divided) place on those issues.

In the future, especially if Macron gets his way, there could still be close cooperation with Europe. I'm surprised but it feels like, when something happens the UK should automatically be first calling Canada and Australia (and possibly New Zealand) to work out if there's a common position.

Well yes, isn't the Commonwealth still supposed to be a thing? And yeah I guess now there won't be a question of priorities, we have shed Europe and went with the Commonwealth.
