I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. The best way to look at it is this:  Phelps was a douchebag, a genuine grade-A douchebag.  That precludes none of the other reasons you listed, but it does allow a nice categorization of him.
