I've no idea if they were aware as I didn't indicate it at the time - not knowing myself and all. :D

And yeah not bad for a school that's only been around like 120 years.

I thought I had.  Well yeah, family photos / class rolls revealed that my maternal great great grandfather went there in the opening class alongside Herbert Hoover.

I didn't know Stanford allowed real gentlemen to take their servants with them.  :P

Nothing like what I'd heard at home: This quote from another Indian Quora user captures just how dim a view much of the world takes of some American social customs, particularly our practice of putting elderly in retirement homes:

Many Indians are very surprised to find out that there are large numbers of Americans who actually love their parents and siblings and wives and children and have normal, healthy relationships with them. Our media has them convinced that all Americans are very self-centered people who throw their kids out of their homes after high school, don't care for their parents, and divorce their spouses. And, I swear, it is literally true that many Indians do not believe that this is not true until they have been to the US and seen examples of good healthy family relationships themselves. I have had heated arguments with people who've never been to the US, but can give lectures on how screwed up family values in the US are.

A legacy admission means someone in the family went to school there *and* donated a bucket of money.

If grabon were a legacy there wouldn't be any mystery about it.

What I still want to track down is why he ended up going to Stanford.  He lived in DC (with parents from New York) and then decided to train across country to attend a brand new university. Only small bit I see is that on Hoover's page it stated that Stanford didn't charge tuition for first year students.

My maternal Great-great-great-great-great-great-great Grandfather was a founder and first rector what later became Yale University and they turned me down

That is Yale gratitude for you.  I have been a Harvard fan ever since.

Do not underestimate something like that.  Back when Texas had tons of oil cash lots of random people from all over the country would attend our colleges since they were free, or so cheap they basically were free, for awhile.  Their descendents probably puzzle why they went all the way across the country to attend a brand new College as well.

Yeah actually as I wrote that post I was thinking that. Only today did I see that whole free bit never knew before.

What's the ellipsis there? And yeah that was my confusion if that's what it was related to.
