 But it isn't like that! Sexual passions are by comparison a torrid and inferior form of affection, transient and based on the impulses of the flesh. He is the human I regard most fondly, and this is thankfully not diminished by some unseemly lust.

What we are is the best of friends, the sort of merry companionship that seldom arises but is more precious than any mere possession.  Everyone should strive to have one such friend.

Here in Japan, I am confronted with an endless number of friendly people, and vacuous women who are as well-meaning as they are empty-headed bring their wiles against me. Some of it is quite pleasant, and I enjoy being here- but it brings to mind that whether my future is here or in the South, my dear roommate will be in Europe, beyond my easy contact. But even so! The bonds of affection are not so easily triumphed by considerations such as distance, not in the modern age of communication.

  I seriously doubt I could ever have a relationship so close with a woman- Less sense of shared identity, less commonality of interests, less trust and emotions and actions clouded by lust. Women are very fun to look at and interact with in the most frivolous of ways, but I am not so sure opening one's heart is so viable as might be hoped or assumed. At best, the result is imprinting one's own opinions upon a woman who echoes your own thoughts- a lady who thinks for herself and yet also has thoughts worth hearing seems a pearl beyond price, such as can scarce be found.
