I like this story of a London attempt to compete with the Eiffel Tower.  There's a good book in that:

They all look worse than the Eiffel tower though.

That said, mock-pursuing a girl you're not attracted to is cruel and ungentlemanly.

well. its not necesarily a mock pursual. She, unlike women I may actually find attractive, is acceptable to pursue- I swore off this sort of thing, but she was grandfathered in as a matter of course. I am bound by previous oaths to pursue her- it isn't as simple as making a new one which undoes the old. In the event that she accepted my affections, i'd have no choice but to make good my prose and date her with the end goal of marriage after a decent intervening period.

I hope this doesn't happen, mind you, as it's the only thing that could conceivably derail my plans to go to Japan- but it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Being forced to share a life with someone would bring stability and grounding. She is uniquely blessed to be pursued by me, alone of all the women in the world. I occasionally get irritated that she doesn't realize what an enormous honour this is and subordinate herself to me, but i've long since become inured to the outrage of it.

Edit: The strange hours I keep mean that I am working on my Japanese assignment from 4 to 6 AM. Out of consideration to my wonderful roommate, I went to the computer lab- where a negro accosted me with a made-up story about how he'd just transferred in and had no password to sign in on a computer. He was already logged on one, but this one, you see, had no sound. Being an obliging fellow who thinks the negro is well enough in his place and should have his trifles indulged as long as they aren't destructively criminal, I signed him in on a separate computer without believing him for a second. Considerate as I am, I made sure to make it a computer I couldn't see him from, so his activities, whatever they were, would be out of my sight.

An hour and a half later I drop my pen, and as I turn around to pick it up, jamal is streaming pornography (white women, of course..) and masturbating indiscretely in his regulation criminal-sized hoodie. Oh, the common decency..

I suppose nobody is actually hurt by the self-abuse of jamal jones, and I don't particularly mind the remote chance I'll be called to the carpet for my account streaming pornography from the computer lab, as it'd make for an amusing story. But what about my delicate, delicate sensibilities?
It can't be helped...We'll have to use 'that'

A is just the bastard child of Big Ben and the Eifel Tower.

Now that is something that would be cool- Big Ben actually as big as people believe it to be.

I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Watch him when he isn't muching, then.
The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

Finally bothered to format the hd and reinstall windows on my "new" laptop. Much, much better. Screw bloatware.
