Awful news about four kids in critical care after playing on a frozen lake in Solihull, which wasn't as frozen as they thought. All of the kids had heart attacks in the cold water. Sounds like two more people (unclear if children or adults) are missing.

Stuff of nightmares - it's one of those things I remember getting a lot of warnings about when I was little but just an awful story :(

I don't know why that stort got top billing on BBC and the Guardian. Feels like local news.

My only guess was it put faces to the 'weather chaos.'

Yeah I think also there was a push notification on lots of the news sites because it was declared a "major incident". I think that just means that you have multiple emergency services responding to an incident, but because of that there's probably a need to follow up and explain.

Plus on a purely human interest level it's awful - it's like one of those public safety adverts made real.

Plus I think quite a few parents would worry about their children responding to 'orders' not to go and run onto or play on the ice; not sure if my nephews of a similar age would responded proply when told not to?

The Strep stuff has been pushed heavily in the news lately too.
Seems the media really want to terrify parents in the run up to christmas.

My mom sent me a link to an article written in English, but she sent the Google-translated Hungarian version. It was astoundingly good. Very hard to believe a software translated it. I could only find a single sentence which could clearly reveal that a real person would not have written that, otherwise if you sent me that text I would not have figured out it was machine-translated. Even just a couple of years ago these translations to Hungarian were extremely rudimentary. I mean, it was an article about football stuff so not some PhD thesis, but still mighty impressive.

I genuinely think the Google translate stuff is the biggest "we live in sci-fi now" change in the last few years.

I know there are issues and I wouldn't use it for a professional context etc but it's incredible. Especially if you get the Google Translate app on your phone because you can hold the camera over text in, say, Greek or Cyrillic and it will translate it on your screen into English.

It's amazing.

Surprised Hungarian is doing well now.
It was always the case that Swedish to engksih  translations were perfect even a decade back but the less related to English the language got the worse it became. Japanese still sucks.
Though gt does keep a professional use in giving you the just and you then are fixing some terrible English and checking the original to make sure the meaning is correct rather than going totally from scratch. I know a lot of French speakers do this too.

Still. Too slow for my liking. A big part of my dislike of French at school was how pointless it seemed since universal translators were just around the corner.

That is, for me, the true scifi-ish Google Translate feature.

Maybe not as perfect as you think.
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.
