They're definitely false advertising.

Wasn't it Norgy who was really misled by the name?
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

Of all the American contributions to modernity, the strip mall has to be the single worst.

What is wrong with strip malls? :hmm:

They are just a line of stores. Nothing we haven't had in American Towns for hundreds of years.

The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

They are a blight.  I doubt strip malls have existed for hundreds of years - even in the US  :P

Fugly and dehumanizing.

A line of stores is a main street or a shopping district.

A main street:

Some stores lined up.

A strip mall:

Some stores lined up.

It is the same damn thing. But hey most of all of them will soon be empty anyway as brick and mortar stores continue to collapse so soon we can all enjoy the dehumanizing fugliness of empty main streets and strip malls filled with dilapidated shells.

You don't line stores up in Canada? Alright. Whatever.

Sometimes strip malls have pretentious facades too.  :P

I mean I recognize that 19th century buildings still standing are more aesthetically pleasing to me than 21st century ones but ultimately the function of these buildings is the same. Lack of decoration or aesthetics while going all in on function would make 20th century architects cream themselves.

Don't strip malls have big parking lots, which main streets, generally, don't?

Yes. The main difference is that strip malls are built for cars and main streets/shopping districts are built for walkers (or often built before widespread car use was a thing). Though, as you can see, most main streets do have parking. Most recently built ones, in Texas anyway, also have parking garages or big parking lots just not actually in the shopping district, just off to the side so you don't have to look at them.

The Domain in Austin is a good example:

Oh very nice beautiful walking shopping experience.

But:

A parking garage makes that possible.

I was just thinking a few weeks back about how retail parks are the absolute devil and need to die.
Though not sure on singling them out as americas worst invention. They're more a symptom of car centric urban design than the problem itself.

I mean I guess all you just hate cars in general. Germany invented those, not us, so direct your ire in their direction.

Still think it beats enslaving horses.
