If you get paid for producing content, you are not an amateur.

Fair point. I guess indie would be a better term in such cases. Though I guess an argument could be made that the line pro/amateur in the porn business is between full time and part time performers.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

Quote from: Valmy on December 13, 2020, 05:03:19 PMcommemorative statues are weird because they are often seen as a public endorsement of the person.

What would a statue as non-endorsement look like?

Well I think it comes from a tradition of public history not really being about past events but as models for citizens to follow. Sort of something like Plutarch's Lives. Something more about using historical figures to advance virtues.

So typically a statue is not so much "this important event happened here and we should all remember it" but something that is supposed to represent civic virtues of some kind. So a statue of an insane baron might be a tough sell on that level :P

But I am pretty sure there are statues that are simply commemorative that don't have those other connotations. I don't know. You are the professional historian here, am I saying anything correct here?

:hmm: I don't see why that's bad. Buying and selling of historical junk is very common.
The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

The man, who had never driven a jetski before, believed the journey would take 40 minutes, but it took four-and-a-half hours

I think fair play to him for getting to the Isle of Man. After landing he then walked 15 miles to Douglas :o

You're definitely growing old, because it's hilarious. Lighten up, Shapiro.

Dude, no offence meant, but given your track record in the forum you've always appeared, at least to me, as an old man trapped in a younger man's body, so you're not really growing old but physically catching up with your mentality.  :P

This reminds me of the most biting comment my mum's ever made.

My dad said I was looking well and, not being able to take a compliment I asked what he meant by that, he said I was looking good given I'd just turned 30. My mum roared with laughter and said "he's looked thirty since he turned eighteen". Oh how we laughed ().
