Nonetheless actually telling a guy I've interacted with to keep my change vs. an extra £3 going off into the aether feels a lot more direct and secure.

You guys famously mistrust your pub owners, so I can see your skepticism. 

Fucking hell. That's horrendous.

Sounds like it, but in the cases I'm familiar with the bartender is just there for 3-6 hours a week to make a little pocket money (totally off the books, btw).  None of them are living off it.  And most nights, the cash tips they earn far surpass what they'd make at a typical hourly rate.  Ends up being a win-win for the brewery/taproom owner and bartender.

That's not necessarily true.  Where my wife works, at the end of her shift, they add up her credit/debit card tips and pay her cash out of the register.

Cash is always better regardless of when you get your tips because Tio Samuel sees the credit card tips but not the cash.

It would be perfect for a show dealing with the subjective nature of reality or altered time lines or some such.
The same show.
Slightly different in different broadcast areas. Or in different broadcast times.
One minor character says a line instead of another.
A girl in red in the background rather than a girl in blue.
The Internet age would destroy it before it even airs of course.
But would be an interesting mind fuck.
