I know, I know. I'm between a rock and a hard place. I'd rather have a shelter dog. But every German Shepard that shows up usually has "doesn't like children" in the description. And the Shibas are still fairly rare.

Shiba kens (Shiba inu just sounds weird to me though apparently it is acceptable too) are lovely looking, but I hear they're a pita to train.
Not sure I'd trust one from a western breeder either. They're too fashionable these days. I smell puppy farms.

By God he should definitely not take a puppy away from a puppy farm and into the care of a loving family!

Also he must pay extra attention to make sure the dog is as inbred as possible.
