You sound like that's a new thing after 240 years.

I don't recall one getting this much coverage.

Who knows why the media gives certain things more coverage than others?  I think it's probably a bit larger than other recent white supremacist type displays, plus the clashes with counter-protesters seem to have reached a higher level of violence more quickly than the norm.  But those things seem mostly a matter of degree, and probably not a huge degree.
