Yeah, they are protesting against being SILENCED by SPANISH FASCISM.

The age thing is very apt. All this people were in their 20s when Franco kicked the bucket. There's a high degree of a nostalgia ride in the independence movement.

Just looking at it, it looked more like they were protesting against free speech, rather than in favor of it.

This is Berga, which is like deep in redneck Catalonia, where they end up doing all kinds of totally freaky (and completely un-ironic) protests like this. The thing ended with the protestors producing a yellow thread form their mouths symbolizing the freedom that will be gained with the Catalan Republic. They also then did this in front of the town hall:



Which I still have not deciphered.

My interpretation would be that they're acknowledging that they're all a bunch of gasbags.  But that's probably not their intent.

What's up with so many journalists not knowing the difference between square metres and metres squared? 

According to the bbc the last islamic state fighters are trapped in an area of 700 sq metres.   

Is it a lack of numeracy amongst journalists or laziness?

it seems to have been an error of the Syrian military spokesperson who first spoke of 700 sq meters, before correcting to "about half a sq. km".

Surely no sensible journalist would take what a Syrian spokesman said at face value, without checking it.
