The new Spanish president has appointed a strongly pro-Europe cabinet, with many ministers with experience in EU bodies. Really happy about that, given the sign of the times *cough* Italy *cough*.

He has a pretty tough task ahead given his precarious coalition, but I hope he can beat the odds.

Yep, the tyranny where you can't force a guy to bake a gay wedding cake.  Teh horror.

Should the government really be telling people what they have to doodle on a cake?

Wait so what was this case about? People being compelled to write stuff on their products or people being able to deny service to people based on their sexual orientation? Because those are extremely different situations. Or I guess some procedural thing in the Colorado Courts that has nothing to do with either thing?

The gay couple in question just wanted a plain wedding cake (after all - who writes messages on a wedding cake).  The baker in question said he didn't support gay marriage and thus declined to make them a wedding cake - though he said sell them any other baked goods they might want.

Ah. So what was Eddie talking about?

They should have just said it was a birthday cake and the theme of the birthday party was marriage.

If he was smarter he would have said that he would sell them a wedding cake, but his religious convictions compelled him to write a bible verse on it or something.

Or they could just as easily have said it was for a hetero marriage.  But the gay couple, just as much as the baker, were looking to make a statement.

They could lie? That seems like a terrible idea for a lot of reasons (aside from the integrity issue, imagine they ordered the cake dishonestly and the baker found out at the time of the marriage and refused to deliver the cake). They also never knew the baker would refuse their service (I presume).

I don't know the details of their interactions, but is this really fair?

Is it "looking to make a statement", merely to act normally and not lie about who you are?

BB gave a bad reason, but I think they were looking to make a statement--rather than go to court, they could have just gone to another baker.

Yeah, if the service he provided to the public was selling wedding cakes with bible verses he would likely be fine.

The gay couple needs to pretend it is not for them and not pretending to be something they are not is "making a statement"?   That is some warped disturbing logic there BB.

I think you and BB are missing the point.  That was clear cut denial of a service generally available to the public based on sexual orientation.  Are you proposing that the best remedy for that breach is simply to move along?

That's a different decision point though.
