Doesn't seem like there would be a biological reason for that. I'm guessing some kind of selection bias or survey flaw.

The US isn't even the most obese anymore. The Aussies and the Brits are fatter than us now.

It could be obesity as mentioned, or perhaps religious upbringing. It would be interesting to see the state or even better, county distribution within the US.
