The young Leonard Cohen looked a lot like the young Al Pacino, at least based on the pic the Economist ran.

I thought the same.
Women want me. Men want to be with me.

I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

I don't think you could stroke his belly though.

Syt need a different avatar.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Agreed. I want to smush it.

I've just realised something.
The word emperor comes into English via French from the Latin imperator.
A word that was originally associated with military commanders, after a great victory they would be given the title as a prerequisite for a triumph.
Eventually the military commanders largely took over the empire from the senate and the word began to take its modern meaning.

Does this sound at all familiar to anyone with a bit of knowledge of Asian history?
Great barbarian subduing general....
Holy crap.
The emperor isn't the emperor. Shogun should be translated as emperor.

Did Tim just take over your account?  Lots of titles have military origins.  Baron, Count, and Duke all come military terms.  The word for "King" in Polish and Czech is essentially Charles, after Charlemagne.

You learn that from pictionary.
