Very hot drinks 'probably cause cancer', UN health agency announces
A major announcement from the UN health body follows a review of 1,000 scientific studies

Drinking very hot drinks such as coffee or tea "probably" causes cancer, the UN has said.

It is believed the temperature, rather than the substance of the drinks, causes cancer of the oesophagus and becomes a risk once beverages have a temperature above 65 degrees celsius, AFP reports. The announcement follows a review of more than 1,000 scientific studies on whether there is a link between coffee and cancer, conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Christopher Wild, agency director, said: "These results suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of oesophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinks themselves, that appears to be responsible."

A spokesperson for the IARC said: "Studies in places such as China, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Turkey and South America, where tea or mate is traditionally drunk very hot (at about 70C) found that the risk of oesophageal cancer increased with the temperature at which the beverage was drunk.

"Drinking very hot beverages at above 65 C was classified as 'probably' carcinogenic to humans."

In response to the findings, Casey Dunlop, health information officer at Cancer Research UK, said: "Most people in the UK don't consume drinks at the temperatures considered in this research, although very hot tea is a popular drink in Middle Eastern and other countries.

I will stop drinking coffee when I die.

Don't worry, it's only the 3rd worlders who drink their tea or coffee really hot that are in trouble. Gentle European coffee (preferably with a splash of cold milk) is fine.

Espresso with a splash of milk?

I drank because I wanted to drown my sorrows, but now the damned things have learned to swim.

:hmm:

Why do we call them "fingers" if they don't "fing"?
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Espresso is in such a small quantity I'm sure it'll be below 65C before consumption which apparently is the temperature that's dangerous.

That is pretty damn hot to the point it seems like it would be very unpleasant to drink.

If it's made right it's cool enough to drink in one shot and therefore IMO not too hot.  Unfortunately where I live it's tough to find a place that makes it right.

Yes, but apparently it's tradition in Japan to drink tea that hot and in South America to drink some sort of herbal concoction very hot. I guess you can get used to it.

Yerba Mate isn't too hot the way Argies drink it.  The water is scalding hot when it goes in but you let it mellow a bit.  Don't know about the rest of SA.

I like my coffee hot, but I have no idea whether that's above or below the 65º threshold.  :hmm:

I suppose that translates to hot solid foods too? I have scalded myself with pizza often.

Caliga

I drink most of my coffee iced.
