P.S.: If you're going to include the war in Iraq, I think it's only fair to include the number of victims of state violence within Iraq prior to 2003.  That would be along the lines of a million plus an unquantifiable amount of human suffering.
And add the cancer dead in other countries that could be saved by American research? I think you take that pic a bit too serious.

If we could bomb cancer, I think the comparison would be more useful.  Can we bomb cancer?  I suppose we could try.  Tim!  We need you for an experiment!

Even better - we get to nuke cancer. :menace:

Nevertheless, I think it is fair to question whether the wars as they were fought were the best use of America's wealth.
I don't think there is any point in questioning it.  I think it should be obvious by now that War on Terror was largely a catrastrophic waste of army personnel, wealth, and diplomatic capital.  The 3,000 civilians bin Laden got was nothing compared to what we inflicted upon ourselves.

Why do you hate official use of systematic torture?

Ahem - enhanced interrogation techniques.

Oh, man, I just realized that since I have two jars of spaghetti sauce and two bags of whatever the hell the meat-substitute product is made of, I can subdivide it into thirds of both instead of halves of each.  Sweet.  I've only eaten about 4500 calories since Sunday, so I could use the meal. :)

Dug myself a neat hole- I walked into class blissfully unaware a five page paper was due.

Something compelled me to go up to the professor and prostrate myself before her in dogeza fashion- In front of everyone, I apologized for my mis-step, but promised, if she would stay her hand and forego any late penalty, to produce by this time tomorrow a ten page paper instead, of such quality that it would be a testament to her quality as a professor, and begged her to fail me for the entire course if it should not be the finest paper she received out of the entire class.

Such theatrics appealed greatly to my nature, and the spectacle it created made her deign to accept my offer- but I have just committed to quite a large assignment with a 24 hour deadline. I will be busy.
It can't be helped...We'll have to use 'that'

It's cool, your laundry and bathroom probably needed to be cleaned anyway.

People like you said the same thing about WWII though.

Five page undergrad paper?  That's like three or four hours of work.  I'd have given you till 11:59.

Actually, a high number of cancer deaths show that a population is very healthy. That sounds strange at first, but when you consider that virtually all types of cancer occur much, much more at high age it makes sense. Countries with bad health don't have much cancer because people have already succumbed to something else before they can even get cancer.

Nevertheless, I think it is fair to question whether the wars as they were fought were the best use of America's wealth.
Curing cancer is a waste of resources as it prevents much need deaths.

In the perfect world envisaged by health and safety freaks 100% of deaths would be suicide.

Too bad the Chevy Volt production line looks nothing like the concept car. I kinda liked the concept.

I only counted American losses.  Foreign people are externalities.

If you learn how to change a tire, you really could become an American.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011
