Is there any good place to find costs of living in England (other than London)?

Exactly what is says on the tin.

A mate of mine recently introduced me to the recruiter that got him a job in England. The guy just sent me info on an opening for Luton. I'm not really searching for a job, but it never hurts to take a look at what's being offered, if nothing else to know how much I should negotiate for in the future. But it's hard to do that if I have no idea how much money I'd spend on rent, utilities, etc.

I would say it is all about the cost of housing. There are small differences in other things but they are not really worth worrying about.

If you work for an employer this will help you work out your take home pay http://www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/salary.php

Rents can be found at places like this http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent.html

Luton is just NW of London, needless to say, look away from London, so further NW would be my educated guess. Rightmove as linked by RH is the easiest way to gauge prices and as he said everything else is largely the same price anywhere.

Yeah there's not a lot of variation in Southern England or more generally south of the Wash-Severn line.

Luton in the February drizzle isn't the most delicious of prospects. It's a town seemingly twinned with the seventh circle of hell. Hence it's top of the flops in the book Crap Towns II: 'Too close to London to warrant building anything approaching what the capital has,' it snips, 'yet just far enough away to offer a sense of other-worldly, neglected isolation.'

Ups No place with Britain's first Arndale Centre can be that bad. Cosmopolitan. Dunstable Downs. Transport links. Cheap.

Downs The shrivelling Vauxhall plant hit it bad. The Arndale Centre: OK, so it ruined the town centre. Crime and some racial tension. People still mentioning Lorraine Chase. Like me.

Getting around Rail: London 30 min/ every 20 min. The M1. The airport.

Schools Not great, though Bushmead primary 'very good' and Denbigh High 'very effective', says Ofsted.

Property Mostly Edwardians and 1930s. Exec detacheds, £400,000-£650,000. Loads of smaller detacheds and semis, £230,000-£370,000; terraces, £110,000-£170,000. Flats, £70,000-£170,000 for lofty swank pads. Watch where you buy: flight paths and rough patches. Agents, such as Haart (01582 417741), around Wellington Street.

I mainly know Luton because of the occasional terrorist plot originating there and an airport used by Easyjet and Ryanair that's really, really not worth the tenner you save.

It could be lovely for all I know, but I'd say maybe look at the slightly nicer towns around Luton like St Albans or Letchworth Garden City (where you'll also get a horrifying insight into what English fascism would've looked like) :)

I wasn't at all impressed when I used to go there, but I suspect the influx of new migrants has rather improved the place.

A bit of a different question, but are there any sites that show good maps of London neighborhoods? Most I have found only show a few or are just borough level. At the current moment, I don't even know name of the neighborhood that I am in.

Where are you, and please don't say Crouch End.

Well they can be very small, often just a handful of streets or just one if a more important one.

Wiki would be you best bet.

They generally don't have any official status so it is a matter of argument and discussion. If you let us know which street you are moving to then the British posters could have fun discussing which neighbourhood you live in.

I see. :D

Well though DSB will chastise me for sharing, doing my short term living in area bounded by Swiss Cottage, Chalk Farm and Belsize Park tube stops.

You're probably in Swiss Cottage, Chalk Farm or, if you're very rich, Primrose Hill :o

Whichever it is, you're in Camden :)

Also, welcome.
