Is there any good place to find costs of living in England (other than London)?

I think that's what you told me when that online quiz told me to live there. :D

Yes. It's the one drum I bang.

Telling the black guy to move to Britton... :hmm:

Most of the people I saw today in Brixton were decidely not white.

Brixton is famously a Caribbean neighbourhood. When I moved there in 1990 it was about 75% black, now it's probably less than 40% although a lot of Jamaicans come into the area to grocery shop etc.

The dreadful irony about people complaining about Brixton gentrifying with lots of rich white folk who can't quite afford to live in Fulham is that Brixton was originally a wealthy Victorian suburb. It's just reverting to type.

By the way garbs, if you can get somewhere close to the Victoria line. It's easily the quickest and most frequent of all the London Underground lines. It's like a greased duck being thrown across ice.

Another up and coming place that's relatively cheap is Camberwell. It also puts you close to Brixton and Peckham. I'm moving there on Friday (have bought a place, so now I read the Torygraph and vote UKIP), the only issue is that it wouldn't be the shortest possible commute to Bond Street.
Welcome :)

QuoteWhereabouts are you in Camberwell Ark? It's not terrible for commuting if you are at the Oval or Denmark Hill ends but otherwise you're dependant on a bus to the Elephant.
Yeah. For the West End it's not great. But the whole Brixton, Kennington, Stockwell and Oval area's good. Stuff happening so you don't have to go into town, but easy to get in if you want to.

QuoteI'll be moving near to Myatts Field - so near the Oval end (it will be the closest tube). I'm game for a Sahf Lahndan meet!
Same.

I like Myatts Field, some nice houses round there. Also you're pretty close to the Turkish supermarket which is amazing (if you've always dreamed of an olive aisle and a baklava counter in your supermarket).

Always think the growth of the African community in Brixton (and Camberwell and Peckham) is probably as big a shift as the gentrifiers.

I have, actually.  :licklips:

Oh I could do that. There is a small strip close by.

@Sheilbh - No worries there. Camden Town reminds me of a place I dislike in NYC (St. Marks Place).  I still need to really get my head around funds but I have been thinking something like Islington or Hackney.

What kind of area are you looking for in terms of a vibe?

Good question. I'm thinking enough happening in the neighbourhood that I don't feel like I need to constantly take long trips out (particularly in sense of restaurants/places to go out at night). At same time want to balance cost but also commute to work (near Bond Street tube stop).

That said I know I am not a super big fan of Camden Town nor Shoreditch vibes. I might stake a hipster in the latter.

I would suggest then that you need to look south of the river somewhere in zone 2.

Brixton might suit you - there's a real community feel and lots of interesting bars and restaurants (admittedly because it is getting richer now, the chains are moving in).

Interesting as that's actually where I spent mort of the day.  Stared at Kennington tube stop then made my way down to Brixton, acros to Clapham and then back up through Vauxhall.

So I've changed up again. Been more focused on (though still a bit broad) Clerkenwell, Angel, Canonbury, Hoxton and Shoreditch.

Gups

All good places. All very expensive even by London standards. Hoxton and Shoreditch very busy, very hipsterish. Angel even busier, more mainstream for bars etc. Bit dominated by a major road. Canonbury is quieter more family-orientated, lovely architecture. Clerkenwell is great if you can afford it, the most central of all of those places and great transport links.

Unless I suddenly get undercut by landlord receiving better offer, I've now secured a flat in Angel. :w00t:

The Larch

If you're into that, there's a *great* Indian vegetarian all-you-can-eat buffet in that area. A friend of mine took me there and it was really cheap and delicious.
