QuoteCBS/Turner announcer apologizes for insensitive remark toward Polish-born Gonzaga player

CBS/Turner announcer Andrew Catalon made a bad choice of words on Friday night.

With time dwindling in Gonzaga's 85-77 win over Oklahoma State, Catalon described the Cowboys' foul strategy as "Hack-a-Polack." The reference was made because Oklahoma State had just fouled Gonzaga's Przemek Karnowski, who was born in Poland.

Catalon was apparently unaware that Polack is seen as a derogatory term.

"Pole" is the preferred nomenclature.

Broadcast partner Mike Gminski, however, quickly said "Hey now!" and cut Catalon off during the broadcast on TNT.  Gminski knows better and he should, seeing as how he's a member of the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame.

Whoops.

Catalon seemed awkward about the mistake and later made an apology during the game's garbage time,.

However, it was of the "I'm sorry if people were offended" variety.

Here's guessing Catalon is going to be a lot more careful with his descriptions in the future.

UPDATE: Catalon later tweeted out an apology and said he had directly apologized to Karnowski, who accepted his apology.

I sincerely apologize for my poor choice of words and insensitive remark during the Gonzaga-Oklahoma St game.

I am truly sorry and I have personally spoken and apologized to Przemek Karnowski, who was very gracious in accepting my apology.

Mr. @AndrewCatalon has just apologized in my person and I really appreciate it! But the most important thing right now is we have this W!

Texas has a marginally better defense than Michigan and Michigan has a vastly superior offense.

Yeah this team does not really do offense.  It is all about rebounding and defense.  Texas has few good offensive players and those it does have Barnes misuses, but then Barnes could misuse Kevin Durant.

By the way that is an awesome preview article.  I wish that dude wrote on all Texas games.

Back in Michigan it's a source of great merriment for MSU or U of M fans when the other school gets invited to the NIT.  I was expecting the Florida grads to be delighted that FSU is a number one seed at the NIT; but it seems they don't care.  As good as Florida is in basketball this year, only college football matters down here.
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

:(  Florida doesn't understand what is important in March.
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

Texas free throw shooting kept them in that game.  That sure didn't look like a 67% free-throw-shooting team!

Neither team looked great from the field, though Michigan hit enough threes to stay in front.  I don't think Texas ever came up with an answer to the double-team on Ridley.

It's funny to hear the CBS talking heads excuse Texas for being so young.  Except that Morgan is a senior and Holmes a junior, Michigan matches Texas youth for youth.  What Texas needs is a shooter.  Taylor gets points, but is not at all efficient (less than 1 PPP).

Okay.  Texas needs a coach, too.

After their meltdown at the end of the season how is this a surprise?
