I thought the orphanage stuff was some of the best part.

Same, especially the small personal tragedy that is revealed later on
with both not getting to see Mr. Shaibel or paying him back
.

The interplay between her and the custodian was perhaps the most compelling part, and would have been the best shot at keeping me hooked in. Especially being that that kind of interaction between an older man and a young girl is probably much harder to portray in media today without potentially coming across as overly creepy...I thought they traversed that potential minefield perfectly.

Bill Camp is one of those actors that's in a million stuff and rarely ever hits the wrong note. A great craftsman.

Yup - it is key to her developing her humanity.

I love the way they depicted her character in this show. They don't tell you that she has been traumatized and that this has damaged her. They show you her flaws and how she manages to overcome them, at cost, with the help of other people.

I think her relationship with Mr. Shaibel is the best part. He helps her, but even as a kid, he refuses to take her crap - he gives her the respect of taking her seriously, which includes not putting up with her bad behaviour. In turn, they beautiful depict his mixture of excitement and almost fear as he realizes just what her abilities are.

In and Of Itself - I wish I could describe what it is, but really I can't - except to say it has magic but isn't magic show.

But I do highly recommend it.

On Crave in Canada - I think Hulu in the US - not sure about elsewhere.

Well put, I was always anticipating the depiction of their relationship to go badly off the rails at any moment.  But it was one of the best parts of the show and made final episode all the more meaningful.

After trying and losing track at the 4th or 5th episode a few years ago I'm finally making good progress with Deutschland 83. Good series. Nicely hides the low budget most of the time, though I did spot one alley which played both a seedy part of Brussels and Berlin just 2 episodes apart.
I've taken to calling it The Germans. As effectively it is a German take on the Americans.

I saw some episodes of that show, had it on record so I probably saw most of a season or two. I don't know how long it was on. I think it was delayed for a couple years? Because I saw the final season over the last year. Good show, I liked it and liked the intrigue on both sides of the Cold War.

Parasite. This is one of the most original films I've ever seen. Fascinating drama, comedy so dark I rarely found it funny(wasn't a problem though). Highly recommend.

Sci Fi "Resident Alien". I'm really liking it, good sense of off beat humor by the characters. Fun show. :)

I care a lot - decent film for amazon prime. Weird in that there's no good guy, both sides are horrible villains. Albeit the one we are meant to sympathise with comes across worse.
I also suspect from the way it's setup and some moments its meant to come across in a bit of a girl powery feminist icon sort of way? Just no.
At least theres sort of a happy ending out of it all.

So, the Oscar nominations are in, and I think I can safely say that they must be the weirdest, indie-est I've ever seen, undoubtly because of Covid blocking so many major releases. Duque de Bragança

I am surprised the Razzie Awards still exist, to be honest.

:hmm: So Judas and the Black Messiah has no leading role.

I always thought the studios worked really really hard to avoid the risk of this happening.
