So, the outdoors smoking ban is going national, as the government has just announced a new batch of measures to curtail the growing number of cases in Spain which includes it, together with the nationwide announcement of a hard 1 AM deadline for nightclub closures.

I love how this is considered "early" around here
 I did see that being announced as a restriction and laughed.
Let's bomb Russia!

I have friends openly questioning what's the point of it all now, and almost prefering to be confined at home again.

As I was discussing the impact of Covid on life expectancy with Tamas a while ago, it struck me how normalized we are to smoking.  If Tamas took up Covid, he would relinquish at the very worst a month of his life expectancy.  If he took up smoking, he would relinquish about seven years.  :hmm:

According to the CDC, smoking is responsible for 480,000 deaths per year in the US. Seems like we are going to fall short of that for covid in 2020.

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

I'm embarrassed. I've been making the mistake of associating with you. It won't happen again. :)

I think effect on life expectancy is a better measure, not that it changes anything here.  People are going to die of something anyway, that can't be changed, but age at death can be.

When do they sleep?  :hmm:

I think that is true--or alternatively the average years lost per death.

During the worst of the AIDS epidemic, the point was made that too many resources went to AIDS vs. other diseases when looking at the body counts. The counterargument was that people were dying of AIDS in their 20s and while other diseases did have much higher body counts, if you looked at years lost due to early death, AIDS was up there with the worst of the diseases. I'd definitely favor the counterargument side.

Austrian nightclubs and bars have been closed since March.

Many Spaniards have chronic sleep deficiency. Usually blamed on being in the wrong time zone (we are in Central European Time). Absurdly long work hours don't help either.

Beats me.

IIRC it has been established that Spain is quite sleep-deprived. I believe the average is 1 less hour of sleep each night when compared to other European countries.

Are they getting any support from the government?

So basically they are closed before they even open?  :P
