It seems to me like the Tory candidates are in a bidding war on who will crash the hardest out with no deal.

We should note that Tommy Robinson lost his deposit and also that the overtly anti-muslim UKIP got comprehensively buggered. The EU is unpopular and many people want to leave but the taste for bigoted politics remains low.

Yes, this is very welcome. Seems like the chaos hasn't been enough to turn Brits towards proper nastiness, which is great.

Yet.

Tamas sorry to have to say this, but just wait till the chaos after a hard Brexit and see who'll get the blame, the EU and foreigners.

UK politics is in the process of taking a very nasty turn.

That is certainly in the cards. It seems most if not all Tory candidates are willing to leave without a deal if that is what it takes to gain power for a few years. In that  case, we will be exposed to the EU's mercy to make the transition as painless as possible. Which is of course will not be entirely in the EU's interest.

Interesting comments from Hammond :

Though the risk is always that the country gets to no deal by default.

It's all very good to say "don't ignore Parliament" - but Parliament has shown itself to be hopelessly divided on exactly what kind of deal it might accept.

Honestly, I have no idea how the hell the UK gets out of this mess without a disastrous no-deal Brexit by default.  The EU elections seem to show that the voters are still as hopelessly divided as they ever were before.

The Euro debacle is an interesting analogy. Those with the power to do something to end it would not, either for ideological or demagogic reasons. And in the meantime the clock ticked away.

It wasn't until the ultimate cliff edge was days away that anyone finally blinked. When it was clear that Spain was about to collapse Draghi decided to break the rules and most of the others at the ECB board ran with it (except Weidmann). Having worked, everyone else resolutely looked the other way (including the German High court).

I am very sorry but Brexit voters are just stupid and are taken for a ride.

One of the Brexit Party MEPs the bloody Northeast managed to elect is a rich guy living in France:

The mind boggles.

Huge mistake the remain side made was not registering the brexit party name years ago.

Rory Stewart may well be a very sensible fellow, but I fear he will undo much of the progress Britain has made in recent years in terms of eliminating the stereotype of Bad British Teeth.

I would prefer it if we could go back to the old days and be mocked for our teeth rather than our stupidity  :bowler:

Don't worry those post-Brexit bright uplands will be illuminated by reflected sunlight from our improved modern teeth.  :bowler:
