I increasingly notice in my daily life I encounter two types of Japanese.
One, which is under 50, does not speak English. When faced with a foreigner they panic, mutter "No English" and fail at communication.
The other, which is over 50, does not speak English however is seemingly unaware of the fact that there are different languages in the world or that foreigners might not speak Japanese. They take their best guesses at what you're trying to say and keep communicating.

The second sort rules.
