Torontos last number one pick was Matthew's, so it's not like it's an guaranteed ticket to success.

Hubris must be punished. Severely.

Habs 1st overall pick since 1980 :

Doug Wickenheiser
Juraf Slafkovsky

Juraf might be great but he's no generational talent. Wickenheiser was not great.

The Caps 1st Overall Pick since 1980:

Zmiinyi defenders: "Russian warship, go fuck yourself."

Sometimes the 1OA is truely a generational player.  Most of the time it's a lottery roll.  The way I look at it, the higher the draft pick the higher the chance of impact player.  Teams have too much analytics and experience now days not to value those players highly for no reason.  They are still 17/18 though and many things can change.

SJ has now moved up in 3/4 last draft years and will be assembling a shocking roster soon.

Oh yeah, San Jose are making out like bandits.
