On my side of the Canadian 2 solitudes, a lot of Arabic slang are making their way into the Québécois accent. I don't find it that jarring but it does make every kid sounds like they are trying to make it big on tiktok.

"But I didn't vote for him"; they cried.

Interesting.  Also there is a weird silent d that is making its way from our Southern neighbours-maybe California?

So didn't sounds like di-int with a soft t at the end.

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

I think Wallah is actually another gift from our American friends.

What does Wallah mean?
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

It's still a bit jarring to my ear, but I am old and shouting at clouds.

Could be worse. Could be the silent English t. "Bo'le of wa'er!"

Yeah, I think the Aussies inherited a lot of that usage.

Do you also say "wadder" instead of "water"? Budder. That is another one of my favorite American things.

Or maybe just a southern or Texas thing.

Here it is still predominantly WaTer and BuTer. But more and more I am hearing wadder and budder. The Aussies say Waddah, dropping both the t and the r. Not sure if they also say buddah.

Yeah I'm listening to my six-year old and it's kind of interesting what's happening. For some - many - words she enunciates the T very distinctly (she'd never pass as a Torontonian, for example, pronouncing every T in the name very clearly). And then there are some words where she goes all in on the glottal stop "button" becomes "beh'en".

The reason I asked about order Incidentally is my 4 year old for some reason pronounces that one word like a 1930s gangster.

Then there's the book/cook thing in his textbook that enraged me....

In other news. This morning I got locked in a weird thought rabbit hole.

Ended up thinking hey isn't it weird how North Korean news anchors have the same whiny hyper emotional performative pitch as enka style vocals... Wonder if there's some broader historic east Asian cultural thing there.

Ended up screaming "BRITNEY IS THE DEVIL. THE CHURCH WANTS YOU TO LISTEN TO HER. DAVID GEDGE IS THE VERY SPIRIT OF THE NORTH"

I think the young'uns pick up key words from the media they consume, and it either fades away if their peers don't also use them or may it'll stick if they all pick up on it.

I mean, I knew a whole bunch of 2-4 year olds who occasionally busted out some very British sounding phrases due to Peppa Pig, and later a bunch of 4-6 year olds who'd have some authentic sounding "big fella" Australian vocab due to Bluey.

crazy canuck

Yeah, when he was about 2 or 3, our oldest would belt out the Teletubbies theme song complete with accent.  It was adorable
