Quote from: Duque de Bragança on September 06, 2025, 06:45:46 AMHey Savonarola, did you catch the rerelease of Hard Boiled in cinemas in your heck of woods?
It's been around here since August 27th and it's a thing of beauty. 4K restoration, with an Ultra HD / 4K disc release following soon.

No, definitely not here.  It doesn't look like it's going to have a theatrical release in the United States.

The 4K release is slated for November here, along with A Better Tomorrow.  I might get that.
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

'Caligula: The Ultimate Cut' - Not the best of films, but it has a few interesting points.

I'm glad I never saw the original release with the hardcore porn.

The "Wolf Hall" trilogy by Hillary Mantel is something of the best I have read.

So, when I discovered our state broadcaster had the serial online, I promptly began viewing.
And I think it is good. Damian Lewis as Henry VIII is very good. Has he ever played a role poorly? I can't recall that at least.

Homeland eventually gave him some pretty shitty material to work with.

I've heard historians say he's probably the most realistic Henry VIII.
It was a good series.

That series went downhill quicklier than a Norwegian skier.

Evergreen (1934)

This is a British musical based on a Roger and Hart play.  The plot is every bit as preposterous as any American musical from the era: the toast of the Edwardian music hall is blackmailed by her baby daddy on the eve of her wedding to a Marquis.  She flees to South Africa.  Thirty years later the woman's daughter, who looks just like her mother is trying to break into showbiz.  A publicity whiz-kid convinces her to impersonate her mother and the British public, but the scheme starts to unravel as her father comes looking for a bribe.  Hilarity ensues.

The film is that it's mostly set on the stage or in the theater, and they try to do a Busby Berkley type number (something over the top on a stage that actually could not exist).  It doesn't work any better than it does in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom".  There was only one Busby Berkley and, unless you had his budget and his mania it's just going to look like a cheap imitation.

The woman who plays both the mother and the daughter, Jessie Matthews, is an incredible dancer.  I'm surprised she never went Hollywood (she was in talks to be in "Damsel in Distress" with Fred Astaire.)

I was referring to Homeland. Which had way too many seasons.

Yes, I've never seen them, but I know she had a Hollywood career.

I know her better as a nazi-sympathiser.

I'm watching Murderbot.
It's decent.
Though huge questions on how this got made. It seems so very off for the kind of thing that usually gets produced.
Which is good.

Well no actual real hardcore sex, but obviously still lots of sexual imagery in this edit.
