On further thought, and maybe slightly sexist, it could also be working mother guilt. Which wasn't really a thing in the era of stay at home moms. Nearly every* instance I've seen of helicopter parenting in my personal life was mother driven. But that could just be a statistical anomaly.

70s cars were has big has today's car, especially in NAmerica with our love of SUV and F150 size pick ups. 80s is when they really shrunk. There's also alot more cars today in absolute numbers.

I think the reason is cultural and 40 years of media built fear of the unsupervised space, especially an outdoor one.

I live in a neighborhood built in the 60s to the mid 90s with big lots and large streets for everyone to play in. Lots of kids roam the streets in bands like we imagine it. From what I've seen all these kids have something in common. They're not white.

They are more anxious in general.  I consider it my duty as a father to let my kids free range a bit.  If mom has her way they'd be terrified of all the best playground activities.

I do blame cars.

Yeah, but you say that about everything :P

Law enforcement involvement is extreme, but with a nation of 300 million a few weird news stories a year does not a trend make.  I still say it's just scarcity of kids thing making people more hyper focused. There have been big cars in the past. Hell common children's toys were damn near designed to maim and kill kids so it's not like life is more dangerous now. That and 24 hour news built to scare people into engagement.

I look at the evidence and see it often points towards cars.

I don't point towards cars then look for the evidence.

I read so much about helicopter parenting the last several decades that I was surprised to see a lot of school kids in their uniform walk to school on their own, while driving my son to nursery. And it got to be a long walk as well.

And before you start I am not walking the kid because there is not an even remotely direct walking route. It would be over an hour on foot but less than 10 minutes by car.

It's not unusual for members of metal bands to have stage names. Though the band "1914" from Lviv, Ukraine, is a bit special

The other day I by chance learned about Johann Friedrich Struensee, a doctor from Halle an der Saale with radical enlightenment views who became de facto regent for the incapable Christian VII of Denmark, enacted a huge array of progressive reforms 1770-1772, but then was executed for his affair with Christian's wife (though the king seems to always have liked him, even despite the affair).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Friedrich_Struensee

He was tutor to Christian's heir, Frederick VI who would continue his reforms.

I met a guy from Flensburg recently.
He had no idea about Angeln being where English people come from.
Though he did note northern Germans have a sense of humour whilst southerners don't

Summary: 46 year old man masturbates in front of magistrate building while showing Hitler salute. Police show up to book him, but the 38 year old woman filming the scene warned them to stay away from him because he was "in flow" and creating his "masterpiece". Apparently it was meant to be a protest against the state of humanity that required "drastic means." Charges have been filed.
