They are the size most cars were in the US before the 1973 oil shock. This is the car I learned to drive in (though it was years old by then). It was the fourth-best-selling car in US automotive history. The engine?  A 455 ci (7.5 l) V-8! It got like 15 milers to the gallon, which is why my dad didn't care if I beat it up learning to drive, because gas was no longer 15 cents per gallon.
