I think Diane Abbott's speech was excellent - and basically sums up all my concerns.

Also, I hadn't realised it but my local MP is voting against which I'm pleased to see. Having just resigned from the front bench over cuts to disability benefits and on this she explained that she had voted for assisted dying in 2015 and was now voting against. She said that the change was the experience of being Shadow Minister for Social Security and Disabilities - working with disability groups and the fact they have universally opposed this bill changed her mind.

Edit: Incidentally, I mentioned that MPs supporting the bill were saying it would go to the Lords who would fix any issues (as an aside that's not normally true for this type of bill). But I feel like that's a growing trend where you get really shoddily drafted legislation often by the governments in the Commons and MPs don't really do the legislative work because everyone knows the Lords will. It doesn't seem like a good trend.

And I know I generally think the Lord do a good job (I think one peer said they were like legislative worms turning shit into compost ) but I slightly worry relying on them is becoming too much of a norm and MPs are increasingly distant from actual legislative work.

Especially when one considers how you join the House of Lords.

I think that's probably why the Lords are actually quite impressive

Having spoken to peers and MPs on legislation I know really well the gulf is enormous.

Surely one should shake the translators hand then he bows to the president for you? :p

Starmer's authoritarian tendencies are coming to the fore again

Firstly, the government intends to proscribe Palestine Action after the recent break-in at Brize Norton. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn81g4e0nlyo Personally I think that a charge of criminal damage and a severe sentence is more than sufficient. They might also want to look at the numpty in charge of base security.

Secondly, there is the business over the Irish band Kneecap. Not only is one of them facing terrorist charges for naughty words but Starmer also thinks it is "inappropriate" for them to play at Glastonbury https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cg5z26dpgd7o

Oh well, only a quarter or so of our population care about freedom anyway (nb. made up statistic).

Josquius

Kneecap are a curious one as its those who are normally so vocal about free speech who are so upset about them.

That's not surprising. A lot (most?) of people who are pro free speech are only pro when they agree with what is being said.

For Labour's part, I assume they want to stay away from anything that can even vaguely be seen as antisemitic.

Or who encourage audiences to kill their local MPs

Or those who are normally so keen on cancelling anyone who says anything they deem offensive are now so keen on free speech.

For the record, I don't think Kneecap should be prosecuted or cancelled but people are entitled to call them out for their actions.

The only place I'm seeing this is in response to the supposed free speech champions being up in arms. It's not a story I see much of though.

Yep, both sides are raging hypocrites.

Explain the difference between canceling somebody and calling them out for their actions.
