I presumed he is outraged that police departments have taken on the helicopter parent role, and seek to punish those parents to fail to follow that example.

Ivey told the station that her two sons were walking the two blocks home from a shopping center for the first time on their own when the accident occurred, WSOC reported.

 
At 8-9-10 I was walking further than that to go to school and for my sports in a mid size city.  Also crossing train tracks on my path.

At 10-11 (4th-5th-6th grade) I was biking to school, which is about 5km from my actual home, but that was then in a very small city.  Still, no biking lanes back then.

Nowadays, my nieces and nephew, 300m from school, their mom was driving them to elementary school every morning "for fear something bad might happen".

A horrible accident happened with a kid doing something that should be completely standard. The grieving parents are being prosecuted rather than the driver - a 76 year old driving a jeep, thats pretty messed up in its own right- or on a bigger level the authorities responsible for designing the road.

Well what should be completely standard? Keeping your kids under lock and key and under surveillance 24-7? Is it unreasonable that a 10 year old cannot walk around his own neighborhood?

I just think this is ridiculous. Jail and a 1.5 million dollar bond? And what is supposed to happen to the 10 year old brother? The state take custody?

I don't know, maybe there is some past record of neglect and abuse by these parents or there is some context I am not seeing. But this just looks like taking a tragedy and trying to manufacture a villain to take vengeance on.

Teaching your kids to look both ways before crossing a street, use crosswalks, wait for the light, don't jaywalk until you're older and have developed some judgement about risks.

I think the linked article mentioned they were crossing the street NOT at a cross walk ie jaywalking.
