Right you are, the article says they crossed "outside a crosswalk". But that also does not mean that they walked into traffic. There may have been no traffic when they started to cross - which one assumes.

In any event, it still does not explain why there would be criminal charges against the parents for this. Given the thousands of instances of J walking I see on my way to work, there would be a lot of people in prison.

Valmy is on point.  One can find things wrong in a case like this...sure.  But it is being blown out of proportion in the idea that one must always find blame...or a villain as he said.  Even the elderly driver may not be the villain here (whether she should be driving can be another question sure)...sometimes a tragedy is just a tragedy.

Looks like I'm back to this

3 years ago settled on a petrol car. Citroen. This car sucks. I hate it. I've been thinking of a new car in the not too distant future.
Took car for it's MOT today, it has reached an age where it needs a big bit of work done too....and that would cost a fortune. Guy at garage himself recommends selling it.
So I'm stepping up my search a bit. Looking to move into electric. But can't go too small as still have kids car seats to fit.

Something I read says a Volkswagen ID.3 or Mg4 are the ones to look to

What's wrong with a 3 years old car that requires work?

My car is 3 years old, while we don't have inspections, I don't think anything is wrong with it. It's still in it's brand new state.

It's 6/7 year old. Apparently have to replace the timing belt every 6 years or 60k miles - I'm over the time and approaching the mileage.

Also it's a terrible car. Too big and feels liable to go very wrong.

Yeah, 7 years is much different. Now everything is going to fail.

Any Chinese cars in the UK market bringing prices down?

Yeah, the MG I've been told to look at is Chinese. Apparently they're not as bad as they used to be. But still....

Kona are very popular here. The Koreans have started to bring their big SUV, EV9 and Ioniq 9 too. Lots of those on the roads now. It's all those Richie Rich replacing their Teslas.

Know some people who are very into cars going in that direction - got a rental and were very, very impressed.

I recall Japan used to have the impression of being junk products before roughly the 80s, and then started to take over with smaller, cheaper cars and then other more advanced, high-tech products, and we got the feeling over the following several years that Japan was going to economically take over the US (though this ended up mostly being an illusion).

China is giving me the same impressions, but on a much larger scale.

crazy canuck

The big difference is Japan took over the US market delivering inexpensive high quality products at a time when the US still had a vibrant manufacturing sector.

China is becoming dominant because the US and others contracted out their manufacturing to China.

I took my car for its MOT this week.
No issues, all ok.
Chatting to the garage owner about this he recommends Honda as the most reliable. Japanese brands in general overall.
Though he is also skeptical on electrics. They make for expensive repairs according to him.

I have owned an electric vehicle for more than a decade now. I have never had an expensive repair, or any repairs.  I don't know what there is to be repaired.

Perhaps talk to a mechanic, who actually has experience with electric vehicle vehicles?

The only expensive repair I have had was to replace my tires. And last I checked electric vehicles use the same tires as ICE vehicles.
