Don't worry, I have a hard time telling compact cars apart these days, too :D

Oh, that's a good expression HVC,I shall use it to explain my 'condition'.  :)

The only cars I notice around here are the vast number of luxury range rovers, because the wankers fill us so much of the forest roads.  <_<

That bad? Then imagine what is it when that kind of car fills up narrow streets in city centres.
With bad and/or unsecure drivers to boo.

I'd buy it.  If I could get that and an all-electric early 90's Ford Ranger equivalent (full bed, single row) we'd be golden.  Alas, we'll probably end up with a Honda Prologue.

I'd settle for an all electric Maverick.
Getting ready to make IEDs against American Occupation Forces.

"But I didn't vote for him"; they cried.

Zanza

Got a new electric car this week and it plays a kind of ambient sound outside when I open it.

Its to warn anything around you (small critters) that your car is going to be on the move shortly.  With an ICE they get the warning when the car gets started.

Why would an EV not do the same and start making the noise when it's turned on?  That's what our plug-in hybrid does.  People go into their vehicles all the time without intending to drive them.

They don't make noise when it is turned on. Well ok they probably hum a little bit. It was a problem at first when I got my EV because I some times would think it was off when it wasn't. Whoops.

Huh, ours does when it's running on battery power.  It sounds like a slightly hollow mimic of what the engine itself sounds like when running.

I had a coworker who bought a mini. They regretted it after the first snow storm
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".

There's probably an option to turn that off. Internally anyway. They all make noise externally now so you can't stealth hunt pedestrians.

Oh, it's purely external, and I understand why it does so.  I'm reacting to Zanza's making noises before it's started.

Two reasons.  First the volume is much lower than starting an ICE - until an electric gets moving it's barely audible. Second you can start moving almost instantaneously.

So the combined effects of 1 and 2 makes it prudent to give more warning the the vehicle is about to move.

It's all artificial noise anyway. The electric motor doesn't generate any soun, so easy enough to just start the noise sooner.
