Yet another reason why the techbros love this shithole of a country so much.
Ceterm censeo sarmaticem delenda esse...
Or something like that

Duque de Bragança

Poland claimed the Sarmatia label once cf. Sarmatism, careful.  :P
Russia was used in Medieval Latin so it's fine.

Ceterum censeo Russiam delenda esse! Russia delenda est! Either work.

Josquius

In medieval Latin wouldn't Russia be Ukraine?

Khanatus Aureae Hordae

In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

Oh sure the horde ruled the place. But the name Russia still basically applied to Ukraine first and foremost.

More like (Kievan) Rus' today, i.e Muscovy, Ukraine and Belarus

Razgovory

I thought the Latin word for Russia was Ruthenia.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Raz is right. -MadImmortalMan March of 2017

Duque de Bragança

Etymologically related for sure. More common for Ukraine I'd say cf. subcarpathic Ruthenia.

crazy canuck

Being a descendant of Ruthenians who immigrated to Canada from the Austria-Hungary Empire in the early 1900s, I can confirm that it is term used to identify Ukrainians who lived in the North Eastern region of the Empire.

Josquius

I'm no expert in Ukrainian history. Just what I've heard on eg.

I'm also descended from 1900s immigrants from that region though in my case German & Romanian.  I have read many/most of the minorities in those provinces emigrated to Canada.

We (Canada) lied to them. None of our promotional material could show snow, just flowing golden fields of wheat. Your ancestors were in for a shock come winter :D
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.
