Quote from: Valmy on May 02, 2025, 08:50:40 AMIs that true? I find that strange as the advances in drone tech have been known for several years now to be a big problem for conventional militaries. And the US has been big on drone strikes for a long time.

One would think the loss averse western armies would be all about building up huge drone forces. Talk about being able to wage war on the cheap.

What APN is saying is that this is a much bigger revolution than just adding drones as, essentially, replacements for manned aircraft or artillery shells. Russia and Ukraine have hundreds of thousands of drone-trained soldiers, while the US has hundreds. Ukraine and Russia both have entire battalions of drone operators and drones that can be quickly deployed to hotspots. That's a capability that no one else has, yet, and APN thinks that that could be a decisive weakness in a war against Russia.

QuoteI really don't believe that any person, the 8 billion people in the world, I don't think anybody could have gotten this deal done other than Donald J. Trump. When I say this deal, I mean getting these guys to actually propose a peace settlement

There is not enough gas supply on the planet to fuel the gaslighting that comes out of these clowns.

Both Russia and Ukraine made peace proposals long before these talks.  What is remarkable is that despite a high level push for the US, neither side moved at all from their positions.  The Trump team couldn't even get workable cease fire in place.  But they did manage to make complete fools of themselves and horrify their NATO allies to an extent that security delinkage is now a real thing.

There is no way to describe this diplomatic failure using real-life historical analogues.  It's like watching an episode where Basil Fawlty tries to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.

"We know that they are lying, they know that they are lying, they even know that we know they are lying, we also know that they know we know they are lying too, they of course know that we certainly know they know we know they are lying too as well, but they are still lying. In our country, the lie has become not just moral category, but the pillar industry of this country."

Quote from: Bauer on April 30, 2025, 11:01:52 PMThe mineral deal talk gives me bad vibes.  It's like you find a kid who just got hit by a drunk driver, you help them to their feet, then call up their parents and demand something before taking them to the hospital.  Oh and also blame the kid for diving into the car.

Yeah, this mineral agreement is a farce, you'd make one with Norway (or Oregon) if a friendly supply was all. This is window dressing to make Trump feel like the "dealmaker". If...if...if this results in continuing American supply of munitions and intelligence, we are good and Ukraine can continue to sous vide any Russian imperial ambitions.

Yeah that's pretty much my take too.

I'm kind of waiting for some bullshit surprise to be revealed about this - either because it's already part of the deal, or because Trump decides to make something up on the spot - but I guess we'll see.

The whole thing is just shameful.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

You seem to have forgotten Jared Kushner's high tech manufacturing zone in the Negev.

Heh - Coulter doesn't get that the NKorean-style tributes are the entire purpose of the cabinet meeting.  It's not like any work is done there.

Some talk about whether Putin's fancy parade next week is a legitimate war target or not.

What do you all think?

Can Ukraine target it? Should Ukraine target it?

Syt

Not sure about legitimate, and it would likely require a disproportionate response from Putin to save some semblance of face.

But it would be highly satisfying in the moment. :P
