Quote from: HVC on April 15, 2025, 11:26:24 AMViolent crime is down, but (it appears) that petty crime is up. You don't see a murder everyday, but when you see the same shoplifter week after week you get the impression that crime in general is on the rise. How to fix that, I don't know. What's changed in the last 10 years? Is it just a perception thing. Because, anecdotal as it is, I've personally seen an increase in petty crime. Noticeably so. Hell just go on the subway in Toronto.

It's almost as if as people get poorer, they resort to petty crime.  :o

Raise salaries.

That would help yes, and I'm all for it.

I have left my country of birth to avoid living under fascists so don't try that on me it won't stick.

The Minsky Moment

The safest way to go is to incarcerate the entire population.  That way the crime rate goes to zero, assuming you ignore whatever the guards are doing.
We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.

Wait until you hear that taxing the rich also lowers inequality

If you lived in a gangland ravaged country that'd probably sound like a good idea too  short sighted, as is support for Bukele, but when options are shitty even poisoned chalices look shiny and thirst quenching.

QuoteAccording to NIBRS data, the shoplifting rate was 93% higher in 2023 than in 2019, rising from 159.3 per 100,000 population in 2019 to 308.8 in 2023.

And I'm not saying shoplifting, as an example of petty crime, makes people want to kidnap criminals to El Salvador. That's a leap. Just that higher rates of crime you can see makes the perception that crime in general is up.

I like how it goes up in November and December. People are shoplifting to celebrate Christmas.

Quote from: Legbiter on April 14, 2025, 01:24:32 PMYeah plus they are blocking rare earth metals to the US. The plan is to let the full effect of the tariffs hit US consumers and businesses and outgrudge Trump.

I thought it was a blocking of export for everyone, not just the US.

edit: in any case, the autocracies are making their play for world dominance. And they're likely to get it.

What I read is that they're blocking all exports at the moment, to implement a new export permitting and controls scheme. So they're likely to restart exports at some point (hopefully relatively soon), but with a scheme in place to prevent re-export to unacceptable users (I expect definitely US military uses, but possibly the US altogether, and maybe a wider range).

I had a good laugh when you thought BB was being empathetic.  He is the one that took the position the Conservatives should play "footsie with fascists" in Canada to defeat the LPC. As I recall he was quite critical of my saying they shouldn't - going so far as to accuse me of being a Progress Conservative.  I am not sure I have recovered from the mental distress of having that label attached to me.   :D

That's a different topic. Conservatives thinking they can control the far right and then being consumed by them is by now a hisotorical staple.

I agree it is a different topic.  But I can't help notice the argument he makes in both cases ends up being a ends justifies the means argument.

Since even income tax and tax on stock sales are seen as communism by some, yes, communism does raise wages. Redistribution works. Unions work.

Sanders is probably still seen as a loonie leftie in the US, but his plans were/are hardly radical.

What has been radical, is how both Europe and North America have gone for this idea that if the rich get richer, it will sort of help the poor. Fuck that.

Tax those with passive income as much as those with work income, stop letting this shitty "corporations are people" slide and don't let us slide back to the 19th century. I'd make a shitty chimney sweep.
