Since we are not seeing millions in the streets protesting, I don't see why we should fault the Democrats for being so quiet and submissive.

mh, one could expect them to take the lead. Since that is what they basically are elected for: to lead.

The theory goes that leaders are supposed to lead.

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

I think the Dems are waiting for someone to step forward and no one seems eager to do so (or have the mandatory age of 85+ to do so :P ).
We are born dying, but we are compelled to fancy our chances.

Perhaps Congress should be renamed the Great American Duma, to better reflect their control over the executive.

They are elected representatives, they are supposed to represent people who voted for them, and use the power and publicity granted to them by their position to lead resistance to the wrecking job unfolding in front of us.

QuoteOne of them commented that the democratic leadership had told everyone to simply sit there in silence so that they would not become the story.

:bleeding:

By ALL MEANS, avoid being seen. Especially avoid looking like they are fighting back against Trump.

Seriously, WTF is going on, why are the Dems already acting like Orban's opposition 10-years into his reign?

They did try a silent protest:

Which I think was even worse than doing nothing; it reminded me of Wile E Coyote.

In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

The Minsky Moment

We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.

I was wondering why people didn't just get up and leave when the more outrageous statements started being made.

Performative hijinks are pointless in that setting.  They would have been better off boycotting the entire thing.  "Respect for the office" is meaningless when the man occupying the office has no respect for it, and has no respect for the Chamber in which he is speaking.

Some did, Bernie Sanders and Shelia Crockett both walked out.

I don't do meditation.  I drink alcohol to relax, like normal people.

If Microsoft Excel decided to stop working overnight, the world would practically end.

Good to know, I missed that. Glad to know there are still some people holding elected office that can react appropriately.

I disagree. The Dems should have had a coordinated walkout, with, say, four people walking out each time Trump lied or used an insulting term. Linking the walkout to the contents of the speech would have focused attention on the content, which is Trump's biggest weak spot.

So a protest lasting a maximum of three minutes?
"We have it in our power to begin the world over again"
