Quote from: Valmy on February 12, 2025, 03:42:06 PMYeah. That is what kind of terrifies me about Ireland. Theoretically this country is doing everything right so...why aren't things going right? Or at least better?

Is economic growth...not good for the everyday people anymore? Does it just make things unaffordable?

I am reminded of some people predicting economic doom and collapse if we make housing affordable. I mean what the fuck is the economy even for if providing goods to people at a low price is going to screw the economy? What are we doing?

The modern economy just seems like bullshit, I mean more than it was already in the past.

We have one of the richest countries per capita where nobody seems rich. We have the richest man in the world whose great contribution was a middling car company. And Tesla is even in a downward spiral and I doubt it will bother him even slightly.

Oh how we laughed at Lettow. Little did we know he'd probably end up as a "thought leader" for a MAGA-affiliated think tank.

Yes, I've thought the same.
Or at least they rode the wave of some rising zeitgeist.
Honestly I get it. I can see how I could have headed down that path without some strongly set core values.

Quote from: Richard Hakluyt on February 12, 2025, 03:50:52 AMI started looking for a pen portrait of the Irish economy and found this https://oec.world/en/profile/country/irl?importServicesYearsSelector=2020

Absolutely fascinating.

Service imports of $240bn a year, that is about $48k per head. Of that $240bn just shy of $100bn was for "other royalties and licence fees" ...again, about $20k on royalties for every man , woman and child in the country  :hmm:

Yet I was on holiday in Donegal last year and thought it was just the same as it always has been  :hmm:

Because a) everything is securities fraud & market manipulation b) every public company is actually a financial company. If not making a product was more profitable, it's what they would do.

Thank you  :)

CNN just had an article analyzing various Valentine's Day cards.  They had a word cloud of the animals that appear on cards one of which was lobsters.  So I had to look that up and:

From Papyrus; the inside reads, "You're my forever lobster."

(Is Rock Lobster still your theme song, Barrister?  You should get this one for your wife.)
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

I tells ya, if lawyers could come into court with entrance music, WWE-style, Rock Lobster would totally be my song...

I'd have Radio Radio (by Elvis Costello) play as I entered job sites.  Fortunately, for my wife, they don't make radio Valentine's Day cards (other than vintage ones or some stuff on Zazzle.)  I did find this, though:

That amused me, even though I'm not a HAM.

I give my wife various lobster related things for Valentine's Day pretty regularly thanks to that scene.
